Castle Combe Summer Action Day - 10/09/11

Featured Replies

£30 for the session at Combe is about justifiable - £150 (plus consumables) for a day pounding around Outlon Park is harder to explain away

but hey you can't take it with you! ;)

Almost all day track days are around the £150 to £200 mark, which I always thought reasonable.

If you can do 20 minutes on, 20 minutes off and stop for lunch it's quite good for the time and experience.

Problem is if you have to stop. Like at about 11am last time I went to Brands. Something happened to a boost pipe and that was it. Day with training was £300 booked in advance and I only did an hours driving before the issue showed itself. :(

At least with the Brisky session, if you pay and then can't go (like me due to problem not fixed yet) it's much less money to write off.

I would do a full day if the venuce is not a zillion miles away from the South East.

Hullavington and Colerne are pretty much next door to Castle Combe - bit further south/east from memory, but both are accessible from most parts of the country. They are also cheaper. A full day is at most £120 because a coned off airfield isn't quite the same as a proper circuit (less to hit though:D), but I've not seen recent pricing for these days - Not done any airfield days this year, just a day at Llandow where I broke my manifold....

Eg: http://orders.motorsport-events.com/EventDetails.aspx?EventID=cc289ce5-3f00-4e44-ae2d-d2642688865d Hullavington in a couple of weeks time £109. :)

Is it wrong that i'd consider sharing a day with someone - both using my Ibiza?

Fair play they'd have to be carefully vetted and there'd have to be some sort of agreement about coughing up should something go horribly wrong but I can't really see an issue.

Split the costs down the middle and spend half the day driving, half the day passengering.

Ok it'd be twice the wear on PastyWagon but its a 12 year old 115k £1000 car anyways!?

or am i mad?

Not mad at all. I shared a trackday with a mate and his 1.8 MX5 import roadster when the mongrel was off the road after Nurburgring detonation and it was a good value day out, and we both had more than enough tracktime during the day.

I think i just depends who you share it with.

There'd need to be a fair amount of trust and/or paperwork involved :D

So who fancy Cadwell with me? :smirk:

Well, his MX5 was only worth about £1k so we worked on a "you broke it, you fix it" basis. But as it was the car was the epitomy of reliability and despite both of us often spinning out (light car and RWD took some getting used to...) never came close to hitting anything/anyone. :)

I usually book well in advance and get a whole open pitlane day, for around the £100 mark (winter months). Usually book into a local Travelodge for the night before too (£30 a night) to wake up nice and fresh.

Last January was awesome at Oulton Paek, turned out to be a cracking day weather wise, bloody cold but dry (car was covered in frost for most of the morning :giggle: Luckily I had booked myself a garage to park in and get the kettle on when I wasn't driving :D

Action Days are ideal if you just want to do a single session as a try-out, but the very high number of incidents and their need to keep to the 15 min time slots means you can end up with little actual track time. e.g. 14:30 session stopped after 4 laps; 15:30 session stopped twice - only 7 laps.

I paid £150 for 5 sessions and covered 55 miles.

In April I did an open pitlane event at Bedford that cost £130 and I covered near enough 200 miles.

Enough said!

Pretty much sums up the perks of a full open pit trackday. :)

Uploaded my video now in tidy quality for those who have the fast broadband

Great fun and a good day out with friends

Hi Karl

I was the one who chatted to you on the day

i have to say , your car is stunning , I am well impressed

I was so supprised to hear that you had the tuning box on , try a remap , lus the rear ARB , it WILL impress you

But a real stunner you have there , I have always loved the SE`s they are a stunning colour in my view , but if only Skoda could see how good yours is

Well done

Jason....good to catch up my dear , hope the turbo (or what ever it is) gets sorted soon ;)

Sarah

Thanks Sarah thats very kind of you glad you liked it

I have plans for a remap but only after I've sourced a FMIC for it.

I did have a Whiteline RARB fitted, it had only been on for just two weeks and I must say it has transformed the car completely. On the track when I exceeded the grip of the tyres the car would just go into a 4 wheel drift unlike some of the other Fabia's out there which seemed a little tail happy. I had mine set to the medium setting whereas I think most other people had theirs set on the hardest setting which I believe is the cause of their over steer.

Just in the process of buying some KW V1's and 312 Brakes so the FMIC and Remap will have to wait :'(

Hopefully next time I meet you it will all be finished

Karl

Mines on the stiffest setting and my back end didn't

let go once either :(

Was being a bit too careful in retrospect but the

performance of my front tyres in the wet is awful.

I just went to understeer heaven, the back end felt

as solid as a rock but it felt like I had skis fitted to the

front.

Those tyres are coming OFF!

Hopefully it will be dry next time.

Was being a bit too careful in retrospect

Exactly my feelings when I went round Combe the first time :D But, if you really enjoyed yourself and you want to come back for more then :)

Only another 6 months before you can try again :(

I think the rain and slippery conditions reigned a lot of people in

Which was why on the back "straight" i passed a queue of about half a dozen cars :)

Top quality day. Think i'll be boking more late int he year days in the hope for rain ;)

Thank you for the friend request , Forge for the FMIC , sweet talk Pete and he will give you a good price for Briskoda discount too ;)

Awesome , obviously for the KW`s , tell Mike , Sarah said you have to have a good deal ;)

As for the 312`s , have a look on a few forums , we got ours from someone on the TT forum , as they say `Its not what you know , but who you know`

They was standard on them you see , and they like to upgrade to bigger too

Have fun , happy modding and keep that car nice.....just like you have

Sarah

Oh, not sure what happened. It worked last night :(

Can you try the below?

Great pics GabiS. Loads of the J5 mobile too

Any idea of dates for 2012 for the Castle Combe days?

I've got a 30-130 event on the 17th March and Santa Pod in the 24th. Hoping things don't come up on the same day...

A thread is already up. ;) Its 24th April from memory for the Spring one.
