My fans don't come on opinions please! mk1 octy vRS

Featured Replies

Hi all not been here in a while but have a small problem which id like to get sorted before getting my car mapped.

Basically when sitting in traffic/idling 10 mins and more the temp slowly creeps up. The coolant is full and the water pump was done along with the cambelt 20k miles ago.

I have put it down to my fans because as soon as I start driving the car with airflow hitting the rad literally even 100 meters the needle flies back and settles to 90 degrees.. the engine is completely healthy and pulls lovely no smoke or signs of headgasket failure (oil contamination etc etc).

I suspect its the fans as I have never seen or heard them running, I have recently had it on vagcom but no faults were shown but due to the simplicity of the fan assembly I thought this might be why it wasn't logged.

So basically im after some advice/opinions on what people think? Are the fans hard to change on these, looked pretty simple to me.

P.S.. sorry for badly written drivel.. was on the pop last night :drunk:

the fans usually blow the big fuse on top of the battery have a check of these, try a new one if it pops again you know you need a new fan pack

Thanks mate ill have a look at that now haven't got my multimeter with me so I hope I can see if its blown by looking!

The battery pack fuses were all in tact!

Could be coolant temp sensor. The old type black CTS is notorious for failing, it has 2 outputs 1 to the temp gauge, & one to the ECU. If the ECU thinks the engine is cool it won't tell the fans to turn on. Get a genuine VAG revised green CTS.

It's also worth checking the thermostat isn't stuck too.

Good suggestions mate I didn't think of them!

Would the CTS also cause the car to occasionally be a bit lumpy or hesitant? every now and then it can be a bit rough.. particularly when cold

I believe it can cause these sorts of problems too.

I'm sure I read it somewhere on here too. I'll definitely look at changing that then

Yeah my car was very hesitant and lumpy when my cts was playing up. It also made the idleing very erratic and would stuggle to start if the engine was hot.

Okay after speaking to someone earlier I have now got my fans to run by hitting the auto button on the climate.. good start however when its warm its still not coming on so I am going to replace the CTS with the later green one to be sure and i need to check the thermostat isn't stuck shut.

jorily skoda sell the genuine green one on ebay for a good price

Ta pal! i'll order one

ive got on 02 plate and in nearly a year of ownership i have never heard the fans come on.... is this normal? sorry to hijack :giggle:

as long as your temp needle is on 90 and not above then it's fine. Mine came on at Castle Combe but it was 21 degrees and I was sat in the paddock for 20mins. Don't think I've heard them come one before.

As above, providing your temp needle is staying put then you will be sound! Leave it idling for about 10 minutes after a drive, that should do it..Someone from this thread told me if you want to check if they are working hit the AUTO button on your climate control.. should spin them up, its how I found that mine was working

Sorry for the thread hijack

Thought i would try lewvrs's theroy about pressing the auto button and the two fans will spin. I tryed this tonight and only the smaller fan spins. Now that i have thought about i have never seen the bigger fan spin at all. The little one spins fine. My needle sits bang on 90 so i am guesing the smaller fan has the capacity to keep the rad cold. Just for piece of mind though i take it my fan motor is goosed on the bigger fan? Is this a easy job to change over for a new one? Might replace it just for piece of mind.

I was told it was normal for only the 1 fan to spin up, sorry to confuse anyone. both of mine span but I think that could be down the the coolant temp sensor putting it into a safe mode (possibly)

Ahh ok i see, yeah the smaller fan only spins on auto mode on my car. I have replaced my cts and the rad switch in my rad. But i have never seen the big fan spin at all, i am not bothered about it as the gauge sits at 90 all the time even on hot days in traffic etc. Would just like to know if my fan motor is goosed or any other checks i can do to see if it is goosed?

Both fans should spin on auto mode so sounds like you may have an issue.

Ive never seen them turn when the car has the a/c switched off.

Theres usually a way of fooling the motor into thinking its overheating putting it into a failsafe mode where the ECU isn't sure of coolant temp so sends the fans on.. i'm not sure how to go about this on the octavia.. on my old saxo VTR unplugging the coolant temp sensor done this

I think the fan motor is goosed then when i think about it, are they expensive the motors? Any ideas how else i could check? Swap motors over from the smaller fan to the bigger one?

Yeah, your fan is dead. The car can't control them independently - they both come on together.

Try swapping the connectors over if they will fit. Also, check the fan control module. It's under the battery.

pheeewwww thanks for that gents. yeah needles never gone above 90

Any one know how much the motor are? And if its a pain to replace them?

hi mate i had a look myself and it didn't look too hard tbh. Think you have to buy a fan assembly with the motors attatched.. maybe im wrong just looked like that to me.
