Sorry if this has already been covered to death.

I have a VRS CR Tdi. Its nearly 5 weeks old and covered 5400 miles. It came fitten Dunlop SP Maxx, and they seem great.

I am not the slowest driver in the world  in fact I really push it. I had a Golf Gt 170 tdi a few years back and this has Michelin pilot sports and I honestly think the Dunlops hold on better, but when the Dunlops let go they seem to completely. (good for backing off mid corner.

Why do you lot not like the Dunlops? what am i missing?

Probably all to do with the sawtoothing on the rear tyres if the geometry is slightly out (which they all are unless you have had it done yourself).

Other brands of tyre seem to be more accommodating, Dunlop and Bridgestone are the ones all the VRS owners avoid, but they were the OEM tyre brands!

Sawtoothing, utterly poor wet grip and short life basically. They grip great in the dry but show them even a damp road and they embarrass themselves.

Also, at 19000 miles I've had to replace all four tyres on the car already - just avoid.

If I were you, I'd go and get a fulle alignment check on your car to save you some greif longterm.

Same for me, having to replace 2 at 17000 miles and I have driven it very gently, mostly motorway.

My tyre is Dunlop Sport Maxx GT. Yes they grip well in the dry but now they have developed a sawtooth shape the noise is unbearable.

Going to replace all 4 with Falken FK452 then getting a full 4 wheel geometry check.

At the time I got my car , Jan 2010, it was either Dunlops or Conti Sport Contact 2.

SAme issue with Bridgestone, much debate about alignment etc but it is the question of progressive wear and the type of wear, I threw my Bridgestones out long before they had reached the legal limit because they were fine when new but "went off" long before they were worn out in legal terms. When people discuss how long tyres last it is often in terms of would they get through MOT and the legal minimum, the reality according to recent research in that with wider modern tyres the MOT legal minimum tread is too small and most broad performance tyres dramatically lose ability to disperse water by the time they pass below 3.00 mm... So how many miles you can finally squeeze out of them doesn't necessarily relate to how well they drive in the later miles. Other brands seem to be less prone to the saw toothing problem, which is the first and most obvious sign that all is not well, and therefore perform better for longer in relation to cars with this chassis.

My VRS TDI (2 weeks old) came with Continental Sport Contact 2's.

Who decides what tyres to fit??

The magic 8-ball they have in the factory, seemingly.

Seems that way - my two week old VRS TSI came with Dunlop SP Sport Maxx's! Seems it's a complete lottery!

I have a L&K so only 6.5J 16" rims on mine. I have had it confirmed that my rear alignment is out, but can't see evidence of sawtoothing. Probably due to the narrower rim.

Interestingly, the Conti TS830 winter tyres I had on for approx 8K miles since early December show signs of a slight scrubbing on the inside edge of one rear.

I had the Summers refitted a week ago, the old worn Michelin Primacy HP have gone back on the rears for a few months and new Yokohama C-Drive2 on the front. I am a big fan of Yoko's, having had them on Mini's on 10" rims many years ago, and also ATs on my last car which was a 210bhp V6 SWB 4x4. Grip and wear rates seem very good in the wet and dry. I must say the Michelins didn't inspire me with confidence in the wet.

The Michelins I have put on the back have about 3.5mm left on them, they will be getting changed to Yoko's in a couple of months and the geometry sorting out.

Surprised more of the VRS owners haven't tried Yoko's - the S-Drive and ADVAN range look ideal for VRS owners.

If a manufacturer can have multiple sources for components it makes a lot of sense, it protects them against disruption if one source dries up (strikes, floods, wars etc) and keeps the price competition keen.

You'd hope they'd all be equivalent in terms of performance though.

Don't tyres have a tread wear rating? Are the different OEM fitment brands rated the same?
