Just after a little insight. Had a lass hit my vRS DSG whilst it was parked up at the service station coming back from CC (downer to the day). Not much damage (cracked bumper, slight scuffing to tail gate and rear light) but when I started the engine and took it from park to reverse it made a god almightly cracking and donking. Hasn't done it since but only thing I've notice is it donks on down shift now.

Is it just in my head?

Hi,

I don't mean to be scare mongering, but when the DSG is parked in "P" position, I'm sure there is a mechanical tooth that locks the gear train. Sorry, I don't know the correct terminology. Maybe this tooth/tang has been sheared off, or is bent and dragging.

You must never engage "P" whilst moving, so I guess a good bump when stationary might be equivalent ?

Did you have the handbrake fully on? Yes it does sound like the tranny has taken a hit, the wheels are locked when in Park. I gather her insurance will pay for all the repairs anyway.

Thanks for the reply. The dealer seems to think it might have been possible too so they will look at the DSG when it goes in. Just waiting for the insurance company to give the ok

Gutting, fingers crossed it all goes ok for you!

Yes you are right. When in park there is dog clutch that locks the output shaft to the gearbox casing. If you have had a shunt from the rear then it is possible that the output shaft has sustained some damage and that is what is causing the donking on downchange. Fingers crossed for you and I'd get it checked out ASAP.

hmmm.....so would i b wise leaving the car in "neutral" and handbrake "on" when parked out on the street, or at a service station?!?!?

maybe a pair of chocks just to be sure.

definitely a cheaper option than replacing the dsg box.

estimate to insurance company will include a charge to check the gearbox subject to change if there is damage.

Yeah key will not remove unless car is in park which makes sense in some ways
