Dension Gateway Five GWF1V21

Featured Replies

Dension have updated their compatibility list to include the Gateway Five for Octavia's with touch screen head units (Bolero and Columbus). Basically, it is the VW CAN BAP model of the Gateway Five.

Really tempted with one of these as cheaper than the OEM BT Kit and also doubles up as a MDI - USB/AUX/iPod. About £200 should get one.

What do you reckon - worth a punt???

let me know how it goes please - I will be looking at buying in a week or so

Looks interesting. What was the delivery price in £ for the link above?

I've had one for a while. It's been pretty poor to be honest. Think I've posted about it before but the main issue is very low Bluetooth call volume.

I'm waiting for Ben (Shark Performance) to get the parts in to change it for OE Bluetooth and a Dension 100.

There have been quite a few firmware upgrades for the Gateway 5 recently - have you tried these??

Yep done all the firmware upgrades. Even had some 'beta' ones from their support team.

not good then. I will wait to see how others get on. Is it quiet as in others can't hear you or you can't hear them?

What model year car do you have and with which head unit? Have you got the CAN BAP or CAN model of gateway 5?

People hear me ok but I don't hear them. You can crank all the volumes right up so it's reasonable but then the ring tone frightens the life out of you!

It's a 2006 with the standard Stream HU. Not sure which version I have, would guess CAN BAP as it works through the maxidot.

Intersting - according to Dension it isn't compatible with a Stream.

I have a 2006MY, and some of the radio connector pins (CDC earth for example) are in different places than on 2007MY onwards cars.

Have you gone through these options with Dension as they may not be aware of the slight changes in the wiring harness?

Then again, if the ringtone is really loud and the voice really quiet then it suggests it is a BT issue - what phone are you using and is it any different with a different brand of phone?

You have the CAN BAP if you bought the GWF1V21, you have the single CAN if you bought GWF1VC1

It's the same with a Sony Ericsson Satio and an HTC Desire HD.

Not really sure on the connections but it works, just poorly!

It also doesn't read track numbers when playing off an iPod so plays songs in the wrong order! Although it did read them a couple of times randomly!

A word of warning then, don't get a Gateway 100 or 300 then as they have similar issues with track numbers occasionally and also disappearing from the Maxidot at random intervals. The firmware on these hasn't been updated for years, and according to Dension they have no intention of doing so either to fix issues with Octavia's as they don't list the Text capable (Maxidot) versions as compatible.

Go for a genuine MDI interface if you are struggling with Dension products.

Their postage to Australia was very expensive so I had it shipped to a friend who lives in the states and is coming out this way. You could use a freight forwarding company as an option.

Reading further posts about bluetooth issues, I actually have a factory BT kit fitted. I hope I can disable it (BT that is), otherwise I will just on sell the kit. I only got this kit based on the price. Dension tech support said the gateway 300 was same kit but no BT but I have not been able to find one.

The Dension website now lists the GW16V21 (Gateway 100), GW33V21 (Gateway 300) and GWF1V21 (Gateway Five) as being compatible with the Swing, Bolero and Columbus. One of the screenshots on their front page for the Gateway Five also looks like a Bolero.

That would be great if Skoda & Volkswagen supported the iPod UI mode as well as the iPod Gateway mode. Without this you can't use apps like Spotify or sat navs with the car speakers. You can do it if you have MDI and bluetooth (plug the iPhone/iPod into the MDI, pair it with the bluetooth, set the stereo to play bluetooth audio and set the iPhone/iPod to play audio over bluetooth).

Yep, text capable units compatible with text capable HU's - the OP has a Stream though, so they only list the non-text capable GW100/300/500 as compatible - no display on the Maxidot and having to fumble through the menus using the CD 1-6 buttons.

Just checked the firmware for these, still dated April 2008 which will be FW4.00 I think.

Agreed, but the GW100/300/500 are a pain to use if you don't have the text display. You can use the text models with a Stream but as many of us found out, it isn't very reliable.
