Boot power outlet failure?!

Featured Replies

hi guys! have had a google hunt for a coupe hours and also semi stripped my car back to try and work it out, so hoping someone with superb wiring loom knowledge can maybe solve this (probably simple) problem?

Long story short my power outlet (12v cigarette lighter type) in the right side of my boot space is completely dead.

-it has worked in the past for me and never been a problem

-i have pulled back the trim and applied a voltmeter directly to the wiring and get 0 volts so not the socket at fault (brown and red wire) I assume brown is the common ground.

-have tried it with ignition, without ignition, with engine running, etc

-have confirmed all fuses in fuse box present and not blown

-can confirm ALL other electrics in my car are working perfectly (boot light is ok, other cigarette lighters are fine, etc)

...so what the devil is wrong?! Anyone else had this issue?

hmmm... :wonder:

You should get a reading of 12v at the socket, if you get 0 you have no power to it, this socket is live all the time and is only fuse cotrolled. Negative lead of meter to a good earth and check both cables with positive lead. The centre lead in the socket is the live one.

thanks for the quick reply!

Checked all that and am always getting 0 volts, so my next question is where do I check next? From what I can tell the wires run via a loom down the right sill of the car. I would assume they then run into the fuse box....however all my fuses are intact at the box. Does it run to a fuse in this box or do I need to look somewhere else? has something else maybe shorted in the car because this just doesn't make any sense to me!

The fuse for this is behind the dash panel above the pedals. Do a search on here . i posted how to fix it once... a long time ago

IT is not in the fusebox ! it is in a fuseholder near or attatched to a relay near the bulkhead. the panel drops down when the screws are remove .the screws r hard to find . There are 3 separate fusholders there , one for each cigarette lighter

AAAAAAAAAH! now it all starts to make sense! Thanks for that. I'll have a hunt for these hidden fuses and shout back.

well, it's been a very constructive day!

THANKS ALL AT BRISKODA!

Long story short, in case anyone else has this problem, the attached images show where this little beggar of a fuse sits.

1)remove 2 screws that side under and next to the fuse board (behind the door panel on the side of the dashboard)

2)remove 2 more screws; one to the underside left of the steering column, one to the right (if you look carefully it is pretty obvious to find the right ones)

3)make sure you now remove the lighting control knob to the side of the steering column (when in off position, push it IN and to the right) this will allow you to pull forward the knob out of the dash and then detach it from its connector behind

4) gently pull and pop off the entire dash panel below the vents. BE CAREFUL as the diagnostic connector is connected to this panel, so just pop it off and allow it to rest in the footwell. You may need to unclip the wire connection to the dashboard illumination and headlight level switches too to help with access

5) now you can see the damn panel of fuses and relays (pictured below) For some reason there are a few individual standard car type fuses littered about this place! one of them that sits under all these relays is a 20 amp fuse (you can see it on the bottom right of the bank of relays). It's easy to get to now. This is the one that feeds the boot power outlet. Replace it and job done!

Maybe this will be of help to someone out there!
