Possible air con issue 06 VRS

Featured Replies

Been using the air con more than usual with the mega weather over the weekend - it's working fine in that it is producing cold air in the usual quantities, but I've noticed a pronounced wheezing sound from the vents like it's got asthma - is this a warning of impending trouble/ do I need to have the systen re-gassed? It's not been done yet since new.

Cheers

Hi Rick

I must admit if you have never had it re gassed you are on borrowed time (they reckon you loose between 5% and 15% per year) but

would not think you would hear any thing like a wheezing sound through the air vents if it had lost gas, I would if you have not already

checked it, either replace or take out and leave out the pollen filter!

On saying all this, I would have a re-gas service on the system, as the seals will dry out and ruin the system !

While you are correct about about slight losses occuring yearly, I think that this type of system does escape a lot of "seals drying out" by having the compressor running at a very low duty level when chilling is not required, and ths helps to keep the system oil moving round the pipework and so keeping the seals "wet" and "tight". Rememebr that car chiller systems require to be "critically" loaded - as they are not tolerant to casual "dump some in and see what happens", having said that, after fitting a manifold set I'm sure that some people could safely recharge back up to a safe suitable level while keeping an eye on the pressures, under charging being the order of the day.

I got my aircon serviced by a Skoda dealer at the beginning of last month. All was well until today - it didn't seem as chilled and it was making 'gurgling' type noises :S .

Mine makes gurgling noises when it gets low on oil/gas, all i know is a regas cures it!

It is now illegal to regas a car with a known leak with R134a.
