Mpg (again)

Featured Replies

As you can see from my signature the Octavia estate is going well on my daily commute, but just incase you can't it's 51.6 average. This is a mixture of 30 / 40 / 50 with very little 60+. On a motorway it's a different matter and I wondered if getting the car remapped from shark would help me on longer journeys at higher speed? Also the computer in the car is about 8mpg out which I thought was quite a bit considering the fabia used to be spot on

Now 4 months into ownership and loving it. Took the bikes out on the roof at the weekend and it was great, love having such a big car. Next weekend will finally be fitting my BT kit, iPod connector and hopefully fitting a cigarette lighter in the glove box

Which engine ? And what exactly happens to the mpg at motorway speed? I can get 50mpg on the M1 by sticking to a true 70mph.

I've only recently been able to get 50mpg per tankful and that is by not using the cruise control on non-motorway routes. Been lifting right off the accelerator to get the 200mpg indication whenever possible (down hill stretches and approaching junctions).

My fuel computer is always within 1mpg of my calculation but unfortunately the reset occurs every 20 hours or so.

Sorry, it's the 1.9 105pd and I get about 40mpg when travelling at 70mph

I get better than that, with the DSG gearbox, Could it be fully run in yet? Mine is a late 2oo6 model with 32,ooo miles on the clock, just doing fine!

Its 2007 with 34,000 miles on the clock. Seems odd to me, but I get the feeling the previous owner didn't go on long journeys. I do 50 miles a day going to work and back

My old PD170 VRS did better than that at 70mph (around 50mpg) so something does not sound right there.

At a steady 70-75 mph on the motorway my 2006 105 BHP 1.9TDi would always show high 50's average on the computer and on a good day would show 60-62mpg.

Computer read around 2-3mpg optimistic so in the real world this was 54-58 mpg.

Much worse in winter though - low 50's on the computer.

Hmm, don't know enough about cars but definately seems odd that it's ok at slower speeds :(

My old Passat Estate 100Ps PD would do around 44mpg at 'motorway speeds' from memory. I rarely if ever stuck at 70mph. Reformed now of course.B)

As you get such good mpg at lower speeds, I'd agree that something is not consistent. Check the mpg when you get a long steady run on the motorway, it may be better next time.

Will be going to Devon in the summber all be it with bikes on the roof, but hopefully a long run will give me more of an idea. Still want Ben to remap it as it would be nice to have a little bit more power before I can afford a VRS again or superb if I can persuade the wife that leather is fine B)

Bikes on the exterior will cause a big decrease in mpg. 10mpg at least in my experience. Last, legal, 80mph continental dash resulted in 32mpg IIRC.

Best I can get on the #2 (as opposed to #1) reading is Ø50.0mpg. (Approx 5k on the clock). Don't usually bother with the #1 Ømpg reading as it varies so much.

Not great but it is a 4x4 and our old Passat Estate 1.9TDI PD(100bhp) was only giving Ø45.0mpg on the same reading.

Still nowhere near what Skoda would have you believe from the brochure however, despite not taking it above 2000rpm, whatever the gear. :/

Don't think for a second that because it says 52mpg in the brochure that you'll get it. Ignore what is in the brochure. It's an arbitrary test that means nothing in the real world, and about the only thing it's good for is comparing cars against each other (and it's not perfect at that).

To the OP, you could have the windows open, it could be hot, you could have the air con on, the car might be fully laden (as well as the bikes on the roof). All these things damage consumption. 51.6 isn't bad!

Davey, not complainig about my current economy, chuffed with that. I thought the motorway mpg would be better. Furthest I have driven is about 30 miles on a motorway and the car was far from being full and that only returned low 40s. Just wondered if it was me or if that's what I should be getting.
