Wheel Bearings

Featured Replies

Both my front bearings are shot, that's what the noise was... AmD want like £400 for the parts and labour (genuine) or £365 for non-genuine. That was after the £35 inspection...

I know Unit 18 will do it a lot cheaper but how much have you guys paid?

Granted different size brakes, but I paid less than £150 in July '09 for a NSF wheel bearing using genuine parts, so I would put that at about £170 if replaced today or tomorrow.

Also if your wheel bearings are shot, is it worth while causing more potential damage driving to Unit 18.

Ill tell you what that track day and those spacers could quite possibly have knackered them! Id be plucking for some s3 avus wheels to get rid of the spacers

I paid £80 for just one last year..

Yeah it happened after fitting the spacers. I want to get new Comp's soon. I really, really dislike S3 wheels.

What damage could it cause? I've been driving it for ages!

i dont know about the fronts but the rears can knacker the stub axle if you drive on a dead bearing for long enough...

i replaced the rear bearing on my lupo after driving on it for about 3k and it was completely shot, if the bearing fails completely .... hello locked wheel :o

and on the wheel front, compomotives? or audi tt comps? i believe tt comps fit over brembo's too

Comp Mo 6's, they only do them in 8J though, reckon that's too much?

nope, they'll be fine with the right offset - and look the business too B)

If possible, remove complete hub assemblies from car and drop them into garage.??emoticon-0148-yes.gif

Either supply your own new bearing kit's or let garage supply and charge you for them.

There will be only direct labour charged for replacing bearings etc. with no time spent disassembly/reassembly to vehicle.emoticon-0148-yes.gif

Go for OEM parts...few years back VAG having major problems with the front wheel bearings going on the Fabia MKI and all that used the same part and had a supply shortage!! Mine had gone and the dealer couldn't get any OEM but they supplied and fitted parts (pattern type)....14months later they went!!! and the dealer wouldn't offer any discount etc!!!! :@

If you're lucky, you might be able to pick up both front hub assemblies from a scrapper at a reasonable price. Just ensure no wheel damage incurred in whatever wrote off the car, as this can affect (from personal experience a long time ago) the outer hub housing.

From memory, I bought a complete bearing kit once for about £80 and it was around 2 hours labour to fit. Remove wheel & hub housing then pressing out & in the bearing on a press, then refit. My mate could probably do it quicker than 2 hours now.

For the record I ran 15mm spacers with my old Evolos, on track, and on road, and now run my current wheels with just 3mm spacers. Still got no bearing trouble at all after many years (famous last words now I bet....)

I went to newcastle from MK with a mullered bearing, going to unit 18 isn't going to hurt. As for wheels, I think you'll need to do a few measurements with the brembo's to ensure your going to be ok. Could be a very costly mistake otherwise! :-/

I'd go to Comp's HQ and let them measure it all up. :)

Wise move buddy, they would look bang tidy tho for sure!

Is that wise????......your wallet will be shreaded....and all the plastic melted!!!

If you want a cheaper lookie-likey I'm running Team Dynamics Pro Race 3 wheels which are a copy of the Comp M05 and will clear big calipers!! B)

When my front wheel bearings went, the CV joint was siezed into the hub. Removed driveshafts still attached to the hubs got the cCV joint seperated from the driveshaft, used a hydralic press to try and remove CV joint from the hub, only managed to bend the hub carrier so ended up getting second hand hub carriers, new hub bearings and CV joints.

Hope this does not happen to anyone else.
