Yep, good solid fun cars just check that the pedal box is ok, they are prone to welds failing.

I had a 1.0 in the custard yellow. I still maintain it was the most enjoyable car I've owned after my Saxo VTR. I'm actually looking at buying another in 1.4 16v sport guise!!

Yes they are great, just bought the other half a 1.4, only 60bhp but a perfect runabout.

Yes. To be honest, if I could afford a second car to do the 7 miles to work and back, I'd drive pretty much any small car. An Arosa is quite high on my list of vehicles I'd consider. A RAV4 is at the bottom along with convertibles, but that's another thread entirely....

Yes, perfectly decent little motor. The 1.4TDi responds well to a remap as well. Talk to Ben ;)

Yeah I think I would drive a Arosa, much cheaper lupo and the 1.4TDI lump is cracking.

We had a 1.0L for a year when the daughter was learning to drive, its surprisingly roomy inside and cheap to run for a VAG car. Sold it for £100 more than I paid for it, all I had to do was an oil change and a cambelt during my ownership, costing about £50.

Tried a 1.4 TDI roomster and it felt totally gutless. The 3 cylinder diesels are completely gutless and the 4 cylider diesel don't excite me. Personally I think you need 5 cylinder or more in diesel car to be great to own IMO although I did quite like our Fabia VRS SE and do like our 130hp wiesel Octy1 but my 140 hp wiesel SEAT was dullish. VAG are following the path of TSIs with main part of their R&D. I like the 3 litre diesel but then the 210/265 hp TFSI/TSI is so good again why bother?

If you need a small engine for cheap insurance would and will be going for thr 86hp 1.2TSI. Great torque but lively.

TBF, the Arosa/Lupo is a fraction of the size and weight of a Roomster. 80bhp in a 1000kg car isn't too bad for a town car really! Things like Puntos, Corsas etc are lower than that on the whole I'd imagine.

Test drove an Audi A2 with the 1.4TDi in and it felt nippy enough, certainly not gutless.

Personally I'd own one, but I'd try and change the rear lights as I think they let the look of the whole thing down.

I personally have followed the 100hp/ton rule of thumb and then always looked for an engine which is flexible.

Cars have become very heavy over the last twenty years or so. We had a Mini diesel, before Mini started using the Peugeot engines they used the Yaris engine which was either 75 or 88 hp I think but the car weighed 1.25 tonnes and therefore 1.4 tonnes with me and my kit in it hence gutless.

Go over the magic 100 hp/litre, get an amazing engine like the TSIs where max torque occurs at 20% up the rev range and max power at 65% up the rev range and you are in heaven. All the TSIs are amazing, 1.2, 1.4, 1.8 and 2 litre. I expect there will be a one litre or even 900cc one soon but it will still be able to produce 100 hp (130 easily possible) yet be free revving and fun to drive but economical and cheap to produce.

On another subject do you see the Polo has been given the WRC Entry over the Fabia, shame for Skoda but one can understand why. It will ofcourse use a new 1.6 TSI engine.
