the 400 quid brake lamp

Featured Replies

my high level brake lamp for my vrs estate has most of the leds out on it so i phoned my local tps today and the said it would cost me 400 quid as it comes with the spoiler

so tommorrow am off to maplin to buy leds to repair it myself

What! That's ridiculous!

I didn't realise the estate had a high level brake light in the spoiler, I have an estate(not vRS, and no spoiler) and my brake light is obviously at the top of the back window

Just replaced mine, got just the brake light for local dealers for about £70. Light is siliconed in so just need a flexible stanley knife to cut round. Had to replace mine because the circuit board was knackered in about three places. All leds were fine. Water must have got into the sealed unit. Crap design!

How did you get yours out, i've put off doing mine as i've heard the spoiler has to be removed to get the unit out and i dont really fancy doing that

I replaced mine with a £5 waterproof red led strip from ebay.

Light is held in with silicone, and does just drop out once it's cut out with a knife. Really simple job really.

Think i had to trim some of the internal plastics, but well worth the effort to save so much money!

Oh, also used heatshrink connectors with the car's wiring.

Good lcuk

...I too have done the £5 off of ebay replacement twice now.... Last one I used was this: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=220747212027&ru=http%3A%2F%2Fshop.ebay.co.uk%3A80%2F%3F_from%3DR40%26_trksid%3Dp3984.m570.l1313%26_nkw%3D220747212027%26_sacat%3DSee-All-Categories%26_fvi%3D1&_rdc=1

the internal circuit board fits quite nicely into the standard housing.

Im not sure why it seems to get so wet in there though. Ill need to replace with a genunine next time as i 'slightly broke' the original!

It does take quite a while to cut thru all the sillicone, when I did mine it took ages, but I was being quite careful. The connector for the light is to the left (with the tailgate open) and behind the middle panel that should just pull off....

cheers
