Nick , 130i , is I presume a BMW one series with a 3 litre engine ....................but I don't know what an R43 Golf is .

Nick , this is a BMW 130i

Presume R43 is a typo? They can't surely shoehorn a 4.3 into the Golf's engine bay?!! I thought they might be pushing it with the 3.2 from that Mk4.

Steve

You know how dumb you feel when someone explains something obvious to you? That's me ...:o

Doh....should be R34....apparently the 3.2 is going to be bored out to 3.4ltrs.

To cope with the ever increasing weight of the thing?

Didn't the R32 have the same 0-60 time as the Mk1 GTi? And that only had a 1.6 but weighed under a ton!

What I've read it's going to be a R33... :D

And yes, for all its 280hp and 4motion it will still be nose-heavy.

I can't see this hot-hatch race to 300hp going anywhere. Of course the hp is upped to cope with the ever-increasing weight but you can't beat inertia in corners. Added to the fact that ever fewer wallets will be able cope either whereas old-school hot hatches used to be reasonably affordable.

I'd rather see a race back to hot-hatch origins, i.e. small, affordable cars, low weight and enough hp to make it funky. The Clio 182 is the only one that still qualifies - if only they made it more reliable. (But then it would probably weigh more too...)

I'd have a trimmed down Fab (not the 1250 kg one that's the vRS) with a nifty 1.8T engine please...

Even if you put a 1.8T engine in the Fabia, as evidenced by the Ibiza FR models, it would probably only be slightly lighter anyway, and it would still be nigh on 1200 kg.

Anyway, there is another hot hatch the qualifies with your criteria - the Suzuki Ignis Sport... 935 kg and 110 bhp... pity it looks like a van.

Also your not likely to see many lightweight cars in the future... most modern cars have lots of safety features, and inevitably, that means weight...

bah!

Spend the night trawling through Czech websites and what did I get? Nothin'

Paul, please don't remind me of the inevitable... :( I can only dream, can I?

I wouldn't mind a dressed-down Fabia 1.8T in 106 Rallye style, though. But I guess the dressing down would be DIY, which is a pity having paid for all the excess garbage in the first place.

Anyway, there's another one of those Japanese hot vans on the way - the Mitsubishi Colt CZT 180. 1.5-litre turbo producing 180 hp  at a weight of 1045 kg! Pity indeed it looks like a van...

another car up in this kinnda class when it does come out is the new astra vxr yeah around 20k again but puts out 240bhp and 0-60mph sprint time of around six seconds and a top speed in excess of 155mph,Recaro seats and it doesn't look bad either with nice 18" wheels! and i think it's coming in at
