I only went in for a key.......... now sharked

Featured Replies

Well last weekI finally had chance to get back to Mansfield and see Ben @ Shark Performance (its only taken me 5 months,) to get my new key coded. Thankfully, Ben managed to squeeze me in on a busy day with very little notice and the key was sorted without fuss. Cheryl thanks for the tea while Ben did his stuff.

This is not the end of the story, however, last time I was at @ Shark I had a long discussion with Ben about having the car remapped and promised myself the next time I was there I would get it done. So after a short discussion on the day and with the permission of OC Domestic, Ben loaded his stage 1 map onto my car, with the proviso that if I didn't like it he would return the car to standard when I got back from my test drive. Needless to say I left Mansfield witha significantly lighter wallet that day.

I have to admit the car is totally transformed, the 2.0 PD unit now seems to rev more freely, with power lower and much further up the rev range instead of just more noise. The car has a much more satisfying push in the back and over taking on the motorway seemed effortless in comparison. Economy has improved from 52 mpg on the way up (and I wasn't taking prisoners) and 56 on the wayback down.

Having now driven the car for 4 days I have to say I should have got the car mapped last year, it keeps putting a smile on my face every time I drive it and most of the boy racers in their corsa’s etc don’t expect a non descript oil burner like mine to have quite that much poke ;).

If you are thinking about getting a remap then I can highly recommend Ben @ Shark Performance, I just need to sort another trip out to Mansfield to get the rest of the work done we discussed, hopefully sooner rather than later.

Many thanks again Ben & team

Matt

Welcome to the Club buddy :) Enjoy.

im thinking of having my pd vrs remapped, but have been told i may have to change my clutch as my present clutch would not last very long due to the extra torque caused by having it remapped...

any advice would be a great help guys B)

I have a brand new vrs and REALLY want it done, just don't want to upset anything on the warranty or anything to do with the service and maintenance plan.

Everyone on here loves the remaps, damn I want it although the car is already pretty quick compared to my other cars.

me too nicky boy.

so tempting but i dont want to mess around with the warranty. seen some discussions about it wont matter etc but i dont want to be in the situation that something did need fixed and they would refuse to because of this.

just scary when it is a new car. may have to wait until the 3 years are up then get one.

My thoughts also but by then will I want a new car with a new warranty? Probably

Ever since i visited ben last month my local petrol station must be loving me :D....Cant help but use the right pedal alot more now lol.

Hello Friends,

Chipping, mapping or whatever it's called - I hope it works out for you.

About 10 years ago, I had my Multipla 1.9 JTD chipped - it went like a rocket!

But I didn't like it when the cambelt snapped 2000 miles prior to a major service and cambelt change. Plus my wife was driving - NOT good.

My fast driving days are long gone. These days I'm more concerned with cheaper car insurance and mpg!

Frank.

Frankman, you've already told your tale of woe on another thread. I think you're 10 yrs behind times!

Shark & others have a significant following & support on here.....and a very positive track record.

Your FIAT 'chipping' story is out of date!

I'm young and just out of uni and onto a wage where I can afford a fast car so why not! Maybe when I mature I will be up for that but not yet

I was gonna say similar dunc but refrained. Hehe

Nicky, agreed! Didn't mean to go over the top, but couldn't help myself!!

Frankman, no offence meant, just feel that we're dealing with 2011 now, and things have hugely moved on mapping wise!

BTW, not an expert, but from all I've read here & elsewhere!

Friends,

I may be out of date - and I don't care; I'm just telling you about my experience. With the price of fuel these days, be my guest, if you want to burn up your hard earned cash. I used to do it decades ago, when petrol was very cheap.

Anyways, forget Fiat, you should be congratulating me on finding your forum - I pick up my new Octavia in a couple days time.

So I've told the same story on another thread - is there a problem?

It seems to be I'm going to have a wonderful time here, as I do on a photography forum.

Frank. :D

Enjoy the new car!

Frank - you can have the Octavia remapped specifically for economy gains if you like emoticon-0148-yes.gif

Economy gains are seen on a steady run from a normal remap as well....

As Wardy has said, Frank, maps are not always for extra power. As for the Fiat, I'm still scratching my head.....why would you spend the money remapping a 'Multi-Play'?? I'd spend the money on the darkest tints I could find, then a large hat, scarf and shades...:giggle:

You also forgot to mention, this time round, that it had 70000 miles on it, and as you said, was "2000 miles short of a cambelt change". I severely doubt the remap/chip whatever had anything to do with it. The fact it was a Fiat probably did.

For the record, I had an '08 VRS PD remapped at 2,000 miles and ran it to 120,000 miles, with no major trouble at all, and certainly nothing that could be attributed to the remap whatsover.

Once bitten, thrice shy and all that, but I have yet to read a major horror story attributable to a bad remap here on Briskoda. I know there must be bad tuners out there, but I've yet to read about them on here. :)

My god, my eyes are in tears from laughing from above post. Thanks skodephile for waking my baby in the other room :)

Ooops, sorry about the little one! :)

@Frank...we love ya really-enjoy the new motor!!

Do you know what FIAT stands for anyway? Fix It Again Tomorrow!!!!! :giggle::giggle: sorry just joking

As many have said, a Stage 1 from Shark will give you power and better economy. At least it does on mine, it all depends how you drive.

I could quite happily return an average of 40mpg by accelerating hard and driving at 90mph on the motorway. But I don't. I drive conservatively the majority of the time as I have 2 young kids and my No Claims discount to think about. BUT when you need the power to overtake on the motorway or a tight country lane - boy, does the remap make a difference. My boy racer days are long gone as I am the wrong side of 40, but have not regretted getting the map from Ben. On a recent drive to Somerset from East Lancashire i returned over 62mpg, that was a very full car loaded with family and suitcases for a holiday. I was doing a steadyish 65 all the way. I got a bit bored on the way back and ruined the fuel economy, but I returned 660 miles on that tankful at an average of 55.9 mpg.

Shame you can't use a STS on the newer cars as you would then be able to return to standard for servicing/warranty work etc. and Skoda would be none the wiser, unless they really went looking for evidence that the ECU had been remapped.

im thinking of having my pd vrs remapped, but have been told i may have to change my clutch as my present clutch would not last very long due to the extra torque caused by having it remapped...

I had a Fabia vRS with the PD engine & had a switchable remap on it, To help you decide, i would suggest you trawl the Fabia 1 vRS threads around this discussion for detail ( this has the same engine ), I can summarise for you , having done the reads & exprienced a remapped PD engine.

- Just be sensible about how much torque you have it raised by as this will be the clutch killer, generally the torque will be raised by 20-25% on a generic map & this appears not to accelerate the clutch wear unless the driving style rags the engine with quick shifts.

If you opt for a personalised map again be careful around torque increase as these can be raised above the 25%, to the point of clutch slip, some mappers of the Fabia, would find clutch slip settings then reduce map by 10% for that customer.

A vast majority of mappers are sensible when doing remaps, & will avoid at all costs pushing to the limit the engine / clutch, as the publicity of any of their work causing damage will not help their business.

I had been thinking about having my Octy done, but would not do it without knowing the current BHP & lb/ft torque values as a starting point, sad news is that I have a car that for some reason will not run on a rolling road to give these values ( have tried on AMD's RR day done in Jan 2011)

Hope this helps you decide .

Hello Friends,

thank you for your kind comments - I was laughing along with you! :giggle:

WE can now forget about Fiat, now that I've collected my Octavia. What a dream machine!

I hear what you say about mapping - I'm not disagreeing with you all. I just happened to relate what experience I had with my Multipla, which I had chipped after it's first MOT. Why did I chip the Multipla?? Well go and find one and drive it - it could keep up with Audis.

But I don't intend mapping my car - my wife won't allow it, even for improved economy. I may keep my Octavia for 1 or 2 years and probably upgrade it.

Being almost 54 years old, my boy racer days have left me long ago! :)

Frank.

Frank, enjoy your new car!

Still loving mine 10 months later!

Steve, this seems to be a growing problem-see this thread. ;)

On the bright side - its saved me he money I would have spent getting it mapped
