Octavia II 2005 and Columbus

Featured Replies

Hi all!

I have just found this website and the forum part is very informative. May be some ppl can help me with mí question.

I have a 2005 Octy II and was looking to get this unit:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/SKODA-COLUMBUS-satellite-navigation-system-RNS510-MFD3-/200594755011?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item2eb4610dc3

My question is, will this fit in my car? What other parts are required for this unit to be fitted in my car? I am very newby to this. I have read that some sort of Cam bus is needed for older models to be fitted with newer Columbus.

you may need a firmware upgrade/can gateway/ new radio suround,

Firmware upgrade I assume for the unit not for my car.

What is can gateway, how much does it cost?

What you mean by new radio surround?

My car has the Stream player right now.

Also I wouldn't do the installation, a local Hi-Fi shop or a Skoda dealer.

BTW how legit is that unit on my ebay link? Is it also a stolen unit? Are all these units are stolen unitS?

My only concern about that seller is that he does a lot of parts too, so it could well be a unit that has had parts replaced.

Im sure that wouldnt bother most folk, but personally I'd prefer if it was all original.

That said, it might well be!

The unit I linked is a refub. Though I found a better one, but it has only 6 month warranty on it.

I am still curious where do these guys get these units.

Best bet - don't ask.

Simply put - there aren't enough Skoda vehicles with faulty Columbus or being scrapped with a Coumbus to warrant the number of these so called "refurb" units that keep on appearing on EBay.

There are some legitimate sellers on there, but there are also a lot of not so legitimate.

How do you know?

Well if you attempt to do a firmware upgrade on the unit and it becomes nothing more than an expensive doorstop you know you definitely got a dodgy one.

Well, I just found a local website that sells the same units but with 24 months warranty...he will do my install. Since I ordered wont from ebay already.

He let me in a secret though, most of these units came from rental/demo cars from Germany. Most rentals run max up to 40-50 000 km then they sell it and that is when they take out the factory navi, cause they can sell it faster and for more like that.
