octavia vrs wheel bearing change

Featured Replies

hi guys,my n/s/f wheel bearing has gone and is droning like a goodun.do any members have a link on how to change it,i can do it myself,i just want to know about any special tools needed and any other pitfalls....thanks.

A press.

think it's a bit of a biatch to change. I had one done at UNIT18 whom have just moved to Milton Keynes so aren't far from you, it was a bit of a pig to do.

a very strong press and a small grinder to cut the old bearing sleeve without damaging the abs ring.

I had Awesome do both of my fronts the other day, and it looked like a right pain in the anus to do!

  • 5 months later...

Just had a skoda dealer in Ayr do mine

They said the pinch bolt was over tightened and had stripped the threads

They said they heated up the bolt to remove it, but since the hub threads are stripped I need a new hub and abs sensor

I had the pinch bolt out only a couple of months ago while fitting new suspension and put the correct amount of torque to put back in

I refused to believe I can strip the threads from a steel hub and bolt

Needless to say I argued and the dealer said a helicoil repair might be possible rather than a new hub

Will wait for the out come today

whats the pinch bolt?

are you on about the bolt that holds the strut in place?

If thats threaded your bloody strong!

The only other bolt I can think of is the HUB Nut thread on the CV? buit thats extremely tight std so cant see that threading neither.

basically Id say the skoda place are trying to diddle you and or have f****d up and trying to blame you for it.

just my thought

Billy

Exactly what I said to him

I told him im a aircraft technician in the RAF and have been for 13 years

That's when he started to back track and say rather than a new hub a helicoil repair might be an option

Like you said Billy even the bloody hulk would struggle to strip this threads lol

mmm if you can strip the threads on these components then they certainly shouldnt be used to hold such important parts together lol.

basically they are trying to diddle you.

surely tho helicoils shouldnt be used neither?

I think the helicoil repairs are pretty solid

We use them at work often enough

I have know people using them to repair spark plug threads

But if they insist on a new hub I shall be asking to see the old one
