Changed front brakes :)

Featured Replies

Changed front discs and pads today, all seemed to go well apart from realising my carriers had to come off in order to remove disc, bolts didn't want to loosed but got there in the end.

Now when i came to finish the first side the caliper when on very easily after just pressing it in.

Wow i thought that was easy. Now i had to turn the car around to do the other side (driveway is next to A wall).

So remembering what i had seen on here somewhere i pumped the brakes before moving the car... still no problems.

Now the other side went well until putting the caliper back in place it was so stiff it just would not budge.

I ended up undoing the nipple a bit and released the pressure, after pushing piston back a bit i got it all on and then bled the brakes just a little bit until i saw no bubbles.

So far so good i think?

Went to top up the brake fluid and it was still full,im guessing because the new pads are thicker less fluid is required?

Ok so now to put the wheel back on and i came to tighten the bolts and the wheel is spinning around, brakes not stopping it :o

Put the car back on the ground, hit the brake pedal a few times, tightened up wheel bolts and took car out, all seems ok.

Now it didnt look like the discs had any protective stuff on them which could cause free movement and after a few miles of careful driving everything seems ok.

So is this ok? Think it may be new pads and discs just require bedding in until they bite more, will prob jack car tomorrow and see if the wheel still moves freely with brakes on...

Thanks!

Sounds like the caliper is seizing up to me

Wheel would be spinning because car is jacked up at the front!

Handbrake only holds the rear wheels!

When pushing the piston back undo filler cap in engine bay :)

Discs would most definitely have had anti rust coating on them, which should cleaned off with IPA or pads will glaze rather than bed in. The magic word if your not 100% sure about working on brakes, is GARAGE.

Doh of course it would spin... think its because im expecting something to go wrong haha.

Yes i had the filler cap open the whole time.

Calliper seized..hope not, wouldn't be because i had pumped the brakes after doing the first side would it?

IF it was seized wouldn't the car be pulling to one side whilst driving?

With the discs i did run over them lightly with a wire brush in case there was a coating... nothing came off at all?!?

When i push the pistons back i use wd40 to aid them along also helps unstick them!

Ok. Think i will have another look at the piston tomorrow, see if its ok and give it a spray of wd40 :)

I have a can of IPA so will spray the discs as well.

Cheers all.
