When the Mk1 Fabia came out I believe Skoda was the first to use that platform, Polo came out sometime later.

Skoda always seem to be behind in the engine and gearbox technology though. The 2.0litre diesel Octavia's were PD fueled right up until the end of 2010 apart from the VRS. VW switched to the more refined and economical CR units in 2008. Same goes for TSi and DSG although the current Fabia has the TSI and DSG technology more widely available than in the Polo.

Whether it's later 2012 or early 2013 I'd expect enough twincharge units will be available to cover the existing VRS's life.

VW Driver mag ran a section for a few months with a female technician from a big VW dealership giving an "insight" into the job.....one of the cars she was speaking about had to have this electro-magnetic clutch replaced....involved dismantling lots of stuff just to get to it.....I'll try to find the article!! B)

Found it!!!!

Volkswagen Driver Mag May 2010, Martins VW Dealership, 1.4lt TSI 170bhp in a Golf, fuse for the supercharger compressor was blown, first job was a full diagnostics, then they replaced the fuse and switched on the ignition, it then blew again. Then they diconnected the electrical plug from the compressor clutch and fitted a new fuse...all ok...so the clutch was duff....thing is..this is built into the water pump....big job involving stripping down the supercharger side of the engine!!! :o

It was probably a one off. No car is flawless. I remember worrying about DMF's and the EGR stutter when I was looking at Mk1 vRS's. In the end I bought one and after 3 years and 30k (*touches wood*) it's been fine. How many miles were on the Golf? It's under warranty for 3 years anyway so it's covered. After that I guess you're on your own. It can't be any more involved than changing a timing belt even though it's chain on the vRS?
