Power delivery and turbo kick on 1.9TDi PD105

Featured Replies

Currently driving both a fabia mark 1 1.9TDi (ATD engine PD100) and on occasion a mark 2 1.9TDi (BSW engine PD105). The mark 1 is on 50K miles with the mark 2 on 30k so I'd consider them both "run in". The mark 1 appears to have better acceleration than the mark 2, and with the window down the noise of the turbo is pronounced. The mark 2 seems to drive more like a common rail, but I don't get that turbo kick on hard acceleration (although it does deliver power through the rev range), and the turbo sound is very quiet. Before I get it checked, was wondering if this is normal with the type of engine in the mark 2? Have had a new accelerator pedal fitted to the mark 2 as it was sticking, but not sure if that is the reason. Any thoughts?

I had a Mk1 100 PD TDi and now the Roomster with the 105 PD TDi and really haven't noticed any difference other than the Roomie is slightly slower which is down to its weight/size... Definitely no difference in power delivery, I've never really noticed any "kick" in either when the turbo comes in, it was an excellent engine from that point of view, lovely and smooth...

Hi Gnat,

The 1.9PD normally does give a pronounced quickening of the pace when the turbo really cuts in...with a nice wave of torque from 19-2000rpm upwards. The turbo should be fairly quiet on these too. In fact regarding the rush of power, it is usually very noticeable. If the car in question is generally pulling fairly well and has been properly serviced, there is probably nothing wrong that a good dose or two of fuel system injector cleaner won't sort out. If the car has never been treated it will usually have a very marked effect on the performance once a tankful has been run through often restoring that surge of power. Although I would definitely use a second tankful to make sure all the muck has gone if the car has not been treated before. If the car is one of the rare 1.9 PD's with a DPF then dosing it should not harm the system. Be aware, if the car has not previously been treated it may run a bit rough for a few days as it gets rid of some of the crap in the system and as the injectors get cleaned by the additive. Over the years many customers brought their cars in with flagging performance on PD engined cars. This fuel system cleaner...Redex for diesels or Millers to name just two, really worked well to fix the performance and even improved the mpg's quite a bit too! Customers often could barely believe the difference the additive would make. Good luck and let us know how you get on.

Other things can be wrong with the car, but shouldn't be anything much I doubt. Common are...the MAP and MAF sensors can get dirty which causes incorrect fueling information to be sent to the ecu, But that is easily fixed.

Many thanks for the info. The mk2 does not really give that boost of acceleration when the turbo should kick in, unlike the mk1 which always does! :wonder: Not sure what the warranty issues are with adding Millers? Think I may take a trip up to Unit 18 for a quick check up....
