Variable Service Reset

Featured Replies

Should the variable service info display 2 years and 20,000 miles when reset? The dealer say they have reset my service interval but I get the following info

Looks like they've rest it to fixed.

If you paid for variable, then go back and kick off. A common trick by some unscrupulous dealers.

Yeah I asked for variable and they have even written the next service due date in the service book for 2 years from now. Looks like someone messed up the reset.

Today was the second time I had asked them to reset it properly, third time lucky I hope.

That is set to fixed.

On variable they cannot write in the book when the next service is due because ..... well it's variable! (they will normally write "variable" in the space for the next service details)

I'll maybe see if there is someone local to me with VCDS who can reset it correctly for me, the dealer is not filling me with confidence.

The dealer have informed me that my car is currently configured for QG2 service intervals and not QG1. They have offered to change this for me but I am wary that they have not used the correct oil during the service to support a QG1 schedule. In the service book they have ticked the option to say that a QG1 oil change was done.

I assume your car has a DPF?

If so then the only oil that is suitable for a DPF is VW507.00 - which IS longlife oil. If they have not used VW507.00 oil then it needs changing ASAP anyway.

Yeah the car has DPF so I would assume the oil will be correct which puzzles me as to the reason why they have set the car to a QG2 service schedule. I'll have to check the option codes when I get home and see if the car was supplied like this from Skoda.

Are the option codes printed anywhere inside of the car other than in the service manual?

I'm sure they are also on the sticker in the boot (same sticker as the one in the service book)

Name and shame this place !!! :dull: let them feel our collective wrath of driving past to the next one!

If they fail to do anything about the droning noise I can hear when above 65mph then I may well name and shame.

So far the advice is to leave it and see if it gets worse, I'm not keen on that as it may be something they can not fix and after 30 days/1000 miles that's my problem. Returning the car for a exchange as per Skoda used car T&C is a possibility.

I'm told they have checked all wheel bearings and transmission but found no fault.

Thanks, just looked and you are correct. The car left the factory on QG1 schedule.

Have they checked the rear tyres for 'sawtoothing'? do a search in the MKII Octavia forum - it is a well know problem.(to SUK as well)

I have just had my (variable service) FL Octavia (with a Maxi-dot display) serviced. When I go into the computer to get Service Interval Info the display says Service in --- miles or --- days. Is this correct? I queried this with the dealer technician who said this is correct but I thought it previously showed miles/days. He said this was because it had probably been accidently set to fixed service intervals (even though this was out to 20k miles and/or 712 days).

The tech' said it will just come up with the miles and time when the oil degrades. I've never owned a car with a variable service system so thought you guys would know what's right and what's not. Many Thanks.

Yes Andy that is correct - it takes a whilst for the details to come up.

I've got aquestion for you. Are there different types of services ? I hear a lot of people refering to the 'Variable' saying its best. With a new car arriving in the next week should ask my dealer set my service to 'Variable' or am I barking up the wrong tree ?

Any help would be appreciated. I've got the CR on order if this helps ?

All Octavias come out of the factory set to variable servicing.

However some dealers (including mineemoticon-0149-no.gif) have been known to change it to fixed while they are doing the PDI without asking/telling the customer.emoticon-0112-wondering.gif

I would instuct them to leave it on variable

I appreciate that. I'll check that out when i collect. Is it easy to find on the display? I have Maxidot if this assists?

See - http://www.volkswagen.co.uk/owners/servicing/regimes

Might be interesting to find out just how many owners have had their servicing method set up incorrectly, variable servicing has been around for a long time (at least 10 years )now but it still seems fairly common for the dealer to make a mistake in re-setting it after a service or at delivery. Seems a bit odd to me and another reason I feel more comfortable with the "old" fixed interval system... not difficult to work out roughly when you have to raid the piggy bank... It always seems to be that the mistake is in setting a car that is supposed to be variable to fixed.

Depends more on your driving habits, I do mostly motorway miles and I insisted the car was left on variable servicing otherwise my next service would be the 4th one in the 16 months that I've owned the car instead of the second one... However, if I was doing mostly town driving etc with the occasional run I'd be happy for it to be on fixed servicing (I'd also probably have the petrol too as DPFs don't like stop start traffic...)

I think it boils dow to this: High mileage then go for variable, low mileage stick to fixed intervals...

my understanding of variable servicing was 2 yrs or 20K miles or when the ECU thinks it needs one whichever of the three comes first.
