Is your automatic headlamp not so responsive?

Featured Replies

:) Recently I notice my Sueprb Combi(w/ HID& AFS)'s auto headlamp not so responsive. Whenever the day is not so sunny or a little bit cloudy, after exiting the underground parking or out of a tunnel, the headlamp does nto turn off immediately. It can take as long as 1 minute or two before it is turned off. Does anyone notice this problem???? Or is it just mine?? Although the headlamp turns on instantly whenever I enter into a tunnel or underground parking place.

Cheers,

Eric

Really!? But what is the rationale behind this feature thou?? Can make out any good reason for this feature?

:dull:

It's to save the HID bulbs - they dont like being turned on and off repeatedly or for short periods.

Also i think my dad's Kia does the same. I presumed it was so if ur going along at night and u enter a well lit tunnel, the lights wont turn off inside the tunnel (unless it takes ages to get to the other side). Cause in most countries its law that you need ur lights on in tunnels.

Also, if it was instant, your lights could be flashing on and off on a dull day every time you go under a bridge or a tree.

I sometimes travel from Brecon to Abergavenny for work and there are sections of this road that are quite dark with overhanging trees and it can surprise you when the headlights on the car coming in the opposite direction suddenly come on in the middle at the darkest point. I prefer lights to be on all the time to avoid this.

So I guess it make sense then for the sake of preserve the HID light bulb. But it is really necessary for the light to turned off after almost 2~3 minutes after you exited the car park or tunnel?? I mean are yours all take that long to turn off itself???

I had exactly this happen in SWMBO's Golf, they 'flashed' under a large tree as I was approaching a junction, result? the car waiting at the junction pulled out in front of me :o

I now physically have mine turned off all the time and turn them to auto when needed - I only use the auto setting so the AFS system works.

Does AFS only work with the switch set to auto then?

thx

The Adaptive headlights only work when the light switch is in the Auto position, this is covered in the handbook.

Too many people think flashing of headlights means please pull out in front.

The highway code (and I am sure this is the same for many European countries), all flashing of headlights means is that you are warning other road users of your presence.

Happend to a friend a car pulling out when his lights flashed and did a lot of damage as he was travelling at speed. The other driver thought he was being let out of the junction, so got done for dangerous driving because my frined did have the blues and twos going at the time while chasing another car, so all caught on video.

Now don't get me onto plonkers who use rear fogs in the rain at night.

On my Octy, when in "Auto" I cannot switch the fog lights on manually.

I didn't need them on, I was just experimenting.

But found in the auto position you couldn't pull the switch out for the fogs.

Is this the same on the Superb?

If so, does that mean that when you hae the need for fogs you'll lose the Adaptive Headlights - as you'll have to switch from manual to headlights so you can use the fog lights?

Yes that's exactly the same in the Superb.

Again yes you cannot have fogs and AFS on at the same time.

Not helped by people thinking that either they don't have to keep up to date with the law, or that it's "too expensive" when the Highway Code is available for free online at http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/TravelAndTransport/Highwaycode/index.htm

For the case of "flashing headlights means you're letting me out", drivers have clearly forgotten rules 110 and 111 (http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/TravelAndTransport/Highwaycode/DG_070289) - basically flashing headlights just mean "you should notice what I'm doing", which might include letting you out, but might also mean "you don't seem to have noticed that I'm coming towards you at 60mph - pulling out isn't a good move".
