a couple of issues with my VRS....

Featured Replies

I have 2 issues with my VRS, one is an annoyance, the other I deem quite serious. Any Ideas appreceiated.

1. When driving, I hear a liquid type whooshing noise behind the dash. pressing gently on the plastic of the dash stops it for a minute or two then it starts again. My dealer (well, the lad at the front desk) just said it was the air con noise. to be honest this doesn't make sense, seeing as my old car never did it, but its a possibility..

2. The more serious of the issues I feel. Last night Iparked up after a 38 ish mile drive from brighton (verq enjoyable I must say btw) I put the car in park, engaged the handbrake and.... the revs continued to increase to above 3000. I wasn't touching any pedal, the accelerator wasn't stuck or anything. When I turned the engine off (revs at 25000 ish, the cars revs dropped very very slowly, and juddered when it finally stopped.

This actually scared me quite a bit.

Any Ideas? Worth mentioning to dealer? No other symptoms are evident.

On the second one, did you let the car idle for a bit before switching off, something to do with the turbo spooling down or cooling or something like that!

the car was idling for about 3 mins. for that whole time the revs were creeping up until the engine was turned off. if it is to do with the turbo/supercharger is that normal? Am I panicing over nothing?

Point 1 - its probably the air con as I had this noise on a focus i had, your probably be told its normal and within tollerances.

Point 2 - would suggest if its a one off it could be the ECU gone mad for a second - if it happens again take it to the dealer.

Good luck

thanks guys, appreciated.

(2) Sounds like it could be an idle stabilisation or throttle position fault. These may be logged and could show up in VCDS, so I'd ask someone with a reader to check for codes, and if there are some take to the dealer (paticularly with a slushbox, since you can't stall those).

The shudder is a result of the engine speed the ignition was killed at, rather than a fault in itself.

Hi Vulga,

If it runs ok next time you are out in it, then you almost certainly don't need to do anything. There are quite a few things that could cause this problem, (engine revs increasing before shutdown) a couple of which have already been mentioned. However, remember your car is very much a giant computer on wheels, and as with all computers, there can be software glitches for no apparent reason. That's probably all it was. The wooshing noise behind the dash is common to many cars and probably is the air con but it could be worth checking your engine cooling system header tank to make sure the level is correct, and that there is no airlock in the cooling system ( may need some spannering for this). A partial airlock can often find it's way into the heater matrix and makes this noise. One other point...if your cooling level is compromised with a reasonable amount of air, this could be the reason your engine started to increase it's revolutions before shutdown as some sensors would be reporting a hot condition/weak mixture leading to some funny stuff going on in the engine management and causing the glitch.

For problems 1 I'd get them to check the amount of refrigerant in the system. I had a seat that made a simular type of noise particularly when the car had been just switched off or the air con knocked onto econ. I had a leak in the system and the reduced pressure was allowing the refrigerant to expand more quickly than normal when the pump was switched off.

Re the whoosing & gurgling, I had a similar issue soon after purchasing my MK1 vRS.

Turned out to be a faulty air-con compressor that was leaking refrigerant so thankfully it was all rectified under warranty.
