Mot failure de cat

Featured Replies

Looking at getting a decat, see loads if people have it done but is it a mot failure?

Not on a diesel mate no, they don't check emissions on a diesel. They just do a smoke test.

Thank you, a mechanic told me otherwise, and I thought that it's bizarre that so many people have got a decat and everyone keeps passing there mot!

as of next year there will be loads of new MOT conditions for passing a test. one of the conditions is that a car must have a catalytic converter if it was registered after 2001.

As above, all due to change next year...

So is it worth getting sports cat instead?

Will this affect cars that have had the DPF removed ??

Me nither, I was referring to the MOT changes next year as I'm thinking of having my DPF removed but if it's a No No next year then it will have to stay

The changes arent confirmed yet I spoke to a guy from vosa who will be testing me for my MOT license last week. They are only proposed changes at the moment.

Sorry to ask again but can someone tell me is it worth getting a sports cat now it's looking like decats will be a no

No?

Tbh, unless your going for 250bhp plus the stock system is fine. For looks/noise just get a cat back

Fair enough I would like to get 220bhp ish but that would be about it.

Have a read of the latest vosa magazine "Matters of Testing". There is an article on pages 6-10 about changes to the MOT next year. The summery diagram (page 8-9) mentions catalysts. It also confirms that the MOT will check HID/xenons.

same magazine i read on my lunch at work, how exciting it was!

same magazine i read at work. the diagram shows you the changes they 'propose' to make to the MOT nothing has been set in stone regarding the de-cats and so on. however i think it will only be a matter of time before the said items are brought forward and tested in the future:

cars will have to have cats

vehicles fitted with hid bulbs must have self-leveling and self cleaning

also another thing to watch out for is they want to fail cars that are severly lowered

In previous car (petrols)I have run with de cats as they allow a full flow, used to go to my mechanic the day before the MOT, swap the de cats with the original cat, go to the MOT, back to the garage to swap around again. It's is not illegal to run de cats

if you are pulled over by vosa for a road side check and you have a de-cat and your car needs one for the MOT. they will deem your car unroad worthy and chances are the car will be seized. this rarely happens but we have had a few in to our works where they have had this imposed on there car and we had to check everything was correct and sign the car off
