Oh dear think my VRS is unwell

From what I have read, the genuine water pump is modified now and is the better option.

Heavier drive splines would have prevented several of the failures I've seen. I've also seen it suggested that some of the "broken up impellors" were caused by damage whilst extracting the old pump.

was it the bowders beast i saw entering asda at havant tonight ?

fill us all in then what was wrong

Well Bazaa it was the Bowders beast back up and running. Well spotted  (what were you driving) I did see a silver VRS going the other way. Should of stopped me for a chat. Next time you are local call in.

So the good news is she is up and running. The bad news is i am out of pocket by £434 notes. This was for a full cam belt / water pump / tensioner change, steering rack drain and fluid change, boost leak (turned out to be rear pipe and seal/clip) so could be a lot worse.

The culprit was the water pump.

see below, very visible crack which although in one piece allowed the impeller shaft to spin independantley the the spocket.

will see what my options are to try and reclaim off the parts supplier

I still need to fix my fans which JKM kindly identified as corroded wiring to the Cooling fan controller. Anyone know how easy it is to get to and replace?

The temp is ok but when i start idling in traffic without those fans the temp does start to rise slightly, so will fix over weekend.

cheers

Mark

Glad you got it sorted, ouch for the cost but well worth it for peace of mind.

Glad she lives on mate. I was down in Port Solent today in my VRS on a work outing, anyone see me?

Yes was me in the silver vrs

was going to stop for chat but had frozen food to get home and puppies to feed, unfortunately

on my last mk1 vrs it had only done 22,000 when cambelt was due (4yrs) also changed the waterpump and that was already showing signs of cracking pretty crap really.

How many miles had you done on that waterpump thats bad, good luck with any warranty claim anything will be better than nothing towards your bill.

I would say that the car has done less than 12000 miles and about a year ago i had it fitted. :'(

The problem with most vehicle parts is that the warranty normally covers just replacement of the failed item ,

the small print usually has the disclamer that they wont be held responsable for any labour costs or damages related from the failure ect,

how that stands legally is another matter.

As always the manufacturer is happy to take your money but when there is a problem ,it now becomes your problem

Glad it's sorted Bowders :)
