Currently own a MX5 and gotta say it's as much fun as I have had when driving but looking for something different. Gotta say love the looks of the VRS and the spec with the DSG box and the 180 bhp sounds great fun when the occasion demands.

Do skoda do extended road tests over 24hours so I can see if this is the right car, only ever bought 1 car new and regretted it if I'm honest so really don't wanna make that mistake again. I assume they are built to order so rules out picking up a low milage second hand unit from a dealer especially in rallye green.

You'd be surprised how many are kicking around. You'll find lots in green because it's quite a rare colour on the roads and many of the dealers ordered them in green.

You might pay £13k-£15k for a second hand with a few thousand on the clock.

No harm in taking a test drive or two is there? :yes::p

Im pretty sure youll struggle to find a dealer who'll let out a vrs for a 24 test drive. The cars would devalue too much from a showroom car and then to demo and finally used.

My second test drive was a good half hour. I was allowed to take a normal fabia estate home to see if it fitted in the drive but was accompanied. Dealership is about 20 mins away

Thanks for all the replies, yeh was a bit wishful thinking with the 24hour test. Will arrange a test at one of the 3 local dealers although none of them have a hatchback only red estates bizzarly. May look at the estate anyway so I could pop my bike in the back and help my occasional commute.

I think the reason individuals have ordered them in green (and dealers) is probably because that was the colour of the original concept car/first production spec car shown at a motorshow, right? Certainly the colour of the cars used for nearly all the advertising. It tends to be the way - remember when the Scirocco came out? Whites and greens were really popular I think, as the white was the first production spec shown at an autoshow, and green was the original iroc concept.

Please don't take this the wrong way, but asking the members of a Skoda forum whether you should buy a Skoda is a bit like asking a cannibal if they'd like to have you for dinner...

Oh, also, meant to say that I managed to borrow one for an afternoon (4 hours or so), but I was laughed at (and I rang a fair few dealers) when I asked if I could borrow one for 24 hours or a weekend.

Mitsubishi gave my parents a Shogun V6 for a weekend back in 1995/1996 and then the bought a Discovery so I can see why Skoda are reluctant. Put it this way, if you want one that bad a couple of half hour drives and the odd hour sat in one in the showroom will make your mind up! :)

Fairly common in Europe apparently (at least Germany/Switzerland). Not here, it seems.

I was allowed a 4 hour test drive because I said I wouldn't buy the car unless they could demonstrate that it won't ruin my back. I'm sure if the OP were to construct an elaborate sob story he could get one for a few hours. :smirk:

Not my experience - Had a 5 day "test drive" on my 1st new Mercedes. Regularly get 4-5 hour test drives and had many cars on 24 hour tests over the years.

Speak sensibly to your local dealer, explain that you like the car but moving from a MX5 means you really do (and you really do)need a proper test. Show proper interest in their product and make sure they understand that you are a serious prospect and you might be surprised what they will do. If all this fails, then get a few test drives from different dealers and then decide.

The MX is a really great car and although the vRS will be quicker and ride better, it's not as much fun as the MX - so in my opinion you are very wise to get as long a test as possible. It's not the same as swapping into a vRS from a boggo Corsa after all. :rofl:

id ask if you can take one in the evening when they close and bring it back in the morning. cant see why you couldnt do that tbh

Agreed about the handling (I did say the MX is more fun) As for the ride - It's been a while since I drove an MX so I'll defer on that. As for it being a Girls car......... :thumbdown: I know I'm right 'coz my ex Wife drives one :giggle:

MX5 is more balanced and importantly rear wheel drive BUT the Fabia has more power and is more practical on a day to day basis, four seats for a start.

I got a 24 hour test drive of a fabia and a yeti from our dealer, decided to buy a 1.2 turbo dsg for the wife but with the no VAT deal and the vrs sitting next to the desk where we discussed the deal I don't know what came over me but I bought it. Impressed with it too, my other cars are an A4 new model TDi and a new 5 series, I prefer the fabia and use it whenever I can get the key off the wife

You have hit it right on the head, no not the girls car bit .... Lol..... But the MX5 is a great fun car, one of the best handling cars IMHO. Really want a similar fun experience, I drive RWD everyday at work( BMW technician) so FWD ( especially with 180bhp going through the steering wheels) is a bit of a minus for me.

Hope to get a test drive and see what I think and go from there. Thanks again for all the replies.

Depends what MX 5 you drive. SWMBO has owned a 1.8 MkII and now has a 2.0 MKIII with Eibach suspension kit. Even though both cars are fun to drive the MkIII feels much more involving than the MkII which could be down to engine size, number of gears, suspension fitted or just difference between MkII and MkIII.

The main thing you will be changing (apart from the number of seats) is the headroom, all that sky for a couple of inches of air.

I'd have to say it depends whether you like it once you've driven it. I know for some its not turned out to be quite the car they'd hoped, certainly where the DSG is concerned.

Personally I love ours, the DSG actually makes (rather than hinder) the car. It looks good, is well built and specified and bang per buck there's very little else out there that matches its price, build quality, practicality and its general talents. A Renaultsport Clio 200 is probably out and out the better drivers car, but for me its too small, ugly, only really quick when being driven at 10/10ths and most importantly.....its french....and with that comes very patchy materials and build quality. Great to thrash around for a year then sell on but as a more long term proposition...no thanks.

I think if you're after a good size hot hatch thats to be a daily drive and a long term proposition you could do alot worse than one of these. Remember its ultimately based on a Polo GTi which to the same spec is over £20K!

agreed waiting time on them is bad, best off with a dealer stock/ex-demo car probably; be able to beat the VAT discount deal no doubt and most dealer cars are spec'd pretty well; depends whether you're all that bothered about having a brand new car.
