312 brake upgrade.

Featured Replies

Lovely jubbly B)

I did mine in black Hammerite (mine isn't a vRS) and they don't seem to have flaked, faded, rusted, etc etc, in the 3000 miles since they were fitted which bodes well for the paint.

Oh, and an absolutely immense upgrade from the 256's I had before

Cheers! Same as the 256 standards on my Polo/Lupo GTi then. Was just wondering as they have 54 stamped on them too.

Garry/Gareth are you/did you fit them yourselves? Think ill be doing this soonish i hope

I'll be paying to have these fitted, I have other work it's going in for

including a cambelt service :( I'll get all the work done at once to minimise

the disruption having it off the road for a couple of days.

May as well have them put in by somebody who knows how.

I haven't a clue. And wouldn't fancy messing about with brakes TBH.

Got another coat of paint on today, Once they become touch dry I've

been baking them in the oven for an hour at 50 degrees to fully harden each coat.

She would kill me if she knew :D

Edit, couple more pics this time of the oven process.

I know I've still got some fiddly bits to do.

Someones teeny tiny make up brushes are in my sights at the moment.

Just waiting for suspension to arrive and I can get the car in to the fitter

for the work.

Been quoted around £800 for the work I want done.

with functionality testing a la MOT after fitment,

Fit supplied springs and shocks, any necessary bushes or rubbers and re align wheels.

Full annual service. Oil, filters etc etc

Supply and fit Genuine cam-belt kit and waterpump.

She's going in late next week all going well.

Depends how long the Vogtlands take to arrive from Deutschland :D

Damn your oven is clean!!

That sounds like a reasonable price for all of that work as well

That looks like a fantastic job :) I take it that the 312 mm disks and calipers dont fit under the 16" wheels?

EDIT: Oh yes, 1st post... Hello!

I bl00dy hope so LOL.

I'm not allowed new alloys as well.

Have had to settle for a refurb when I get the car back.

Lepsons Swindon here I come :giggle:

Oh they do? Great :D

The reason I ask, is the OH has a Cupra Ibiza TDi with the AP calipers and theres frig all room around them!

The ap calipers are wider than brembo's tho. These 312mm discs come on some cars with 16's as standard

Matt

Cheers Matt :)

No problem, and welcome BTW :giggle:

Matt

HHmmmmmmmm........going to upset someone now!! B)

When I painted my standard (256mm) calipers for the front and the back I removed the rubber sliders on the front, and on the back I removed the slider pins and concerteana gaiters (I also taped on both front and rear around the piston dust skirt, the hose join and the bleed nipple)....and then I coated it in two coats of proper two part (mix up then use pronto) high temp heat resistant brake caliper paint....still looking good 6yrs later. B)

Mind you on the fronts the brake carrier is part of the hub carrier...so had those off and painted too!!! (was doing the suppension at the time...so went the whole hog!!....but you'r braver than me using the oven!!!!! I'd get a *******ing B)

I got caught a couple of days ago :D

She got home from work early and honestly believed that I

was cooking dinner  until she opened the oven door.

The shriek from the kitchen was something to behold.

As was the roasting (No pun intended) I got for using the

oven for car parts... Oh and something about

"I've been at work all day whle you just spent it sodding about with brakes... ".

Then I did my back in and couldn't tile the downstairs loo either.

You could say I'm in the doghouse right now...

Guess that headlight splitting job will have to wait until she forgets about this one...

You need to be a bit careful with what you heat in the oven.

My Mrs 'cooked' some pine cones before christmas to get them to 'open up' for my daughter to make into xmas tree dec's (she's only 3 - the daughter not the wife!)

I then cooked a pizza and it tasted rank! the pine cones had somehow left a taste in the oven that transfered to food cooked in it. I had to get the Mr Muscle oven cleaner out and decontaminate it!

Woo Hoo Some propper modds then dude!

Lucky boy to get a set in such good condition, cant wait to see it done, you never skimp on quality when you do your car.

Where the Hell did you get the Smooth Green, still cant find any!

Phil!

Where you been mate. :wonder:

Bought the smooth green well over a year ago when I heard it was being discontinued.

Got 750ml for £6.99 delivered back then.

Although Gareth was kind enough to supply some used discs and new pads I ended up getting

a matched set of new ones so I'll hand them back when I see him next.

Thanks very much anyway Gareth but I'm sure you'll understand. ;)

The decision came when I read a comment from SimonK24 in a thread that the Pagid discs came

painted so they resist corrosion for longer so I thought that was a good idea so I opted

for those instead. I managed to get a set for £80 via ebay.

Painting update.

Haven't been putting much effort in on the painting this week.

She's got me tiling the downstairs loo at the moment but when I've had a chance

I've been slapping some on. I jacked one of the other halfs make up brushes

(much to her disgust... :dull: ) for the fiddly bits and overall they are looking

good. There's a couple of tiny smears of paint on the dust seal but I've been

pretty careful.I'm up to about coat six now with the calipers and carriers but

want to do one more final coat and bake of the whole lot and they'll be ready for fitting.

My new suspension also arrived today woohoo.gifso I hope to get it on the ramp this week

SAM_0421.jpg

Jetta taken a lot of my time and £££ atm, but its all OTR and running like a dream (120mph dream)

Gonna have to get some photos up of the final coat dude  cant wait to see how the car looks now!

Well... The big day is almost upon us.

homer_woohoo.jpg

Tomorrow the old tub goes in for a bunch of work.

Brakes, suspension, cambelt and waterpump and full service.

Baked off the final coat of paint today. 2hours at 50degrees and 1hour at 80degrees.

The paint is very hard now and pretty thick after about 7 or 8 coats all told.

Here's a few pics of the finished articles just before I boxed them up in bubble wrap

ready for fitting

The colour in the first pic is most realistic,

the flash made a couple of them look a bit bright. B)

Thanks mate

I think it was worth the effort

Superb!

I didn't quite go to these lengths with mine, just de-rusted with a Dremel wire brush, Kurust, and then two coats of black hammerite and they're pretty good, but yours must look spanking in the metal B)

Thanks mate

I think it was worth the effort

Was definitely worth the effort, they looked A1

I've done mine with a couple of coats of hammerite smooth Satin black today, didn't have time to trawl the world looking for Green as I need to get the car through the MOT. Going to do the rears Black also. I let the Sun do the Baking, do they really need to go in the oven?
