n/s electric window moving in steps

Featured Replies

I've spent the last three days repairing the broken window regulator on my wife's Fabia, (the plastic bracket had snapped and the cable was mangled in the spool).

I bought the repair kit and after much blood, sweat and tears have now got it all back together again. Two major problems (eventually overcome) were

1. removing the electrical connector from the door control unit.

2. attaching the cable around the final pulley on the window guides.

In fact there was another problem: the plastic retaining clip for the window control rod snapped. I overcame this by not replacing the rod, on the grounds that it is hardly, if ever used.

Anyway, it all seems to be working now except that the n/s window will only open and close in a series of steps, whether operated from the n/s or o/s switches.

As my wife can't remember whether it ever did work as a one step operation, my question is should the n/s window work this way? The o/s window works in both one-step and multi-step modes.

By the way, I have tried most of the one-touch reset methods which I've read about here, but they haven't made any difference. I haven't tried the battery disconnect method because I have no idea what she has done with the code for the radio.

I've used contact cleaner on the switches and the pcb – no difference.

Any suggestions?

Whatever mode, it should open and close smoothly. Whether one has to hold the button down or whether one-touch is enabled.

Have you tried the "lock" method, holding the key in the lock to open or close the windows?

Sorry, I should have made myself clearer.

Holding the button down now opens the n/s window 2 or 3 inches smoothly and then stops, hold it down again, another 2 or 3 inches and so on, until the window is fully open. Same again for closing it.

It's the same action from both n/s and o/s door controls.

I have tried holding the key in the lock method, but without success.

Something is too tight in the mechanism, it's triggering the safety feature that prevents children getting squished by the windows.

I think you are right, although I can't imagine what it is.

I checked the window itself to see if it wasn't centred properly on the carrier, but no, that's not it.

I just can't face taking off that metal card again in the unlikely hope that I can find out what it is.

So I'm going to live with it.

Thanks for your help.

Any helful advice on this one?

Got some new clips off ebay to repair mine for the second time and had a go yesterday but the wires seemed to be about 2" too shhort, even with the tension springs fully compressed etc. I came to the conclusion that the mangled wires weren;t helping so have ordered some new ones but am anticipating they will still be really tight to fit...

Hi skomaz,

I found that I was unable to do it on my own. It needs two people, one to pull strongly on the cable to give as much slack as possible to the other, who is trying to wrap it around the final pulley. Even this didn't seem to work at first, but then suddenly it did.

Best of luck,

Ok thanks for that - the new cables arrived yesterday so I'll have another go at the weekend. I'm thinking I'll try and cable tie the springs closed to help and if I still can't get it sorted on my own I'll take it all in to work and get a helping hand...

Well got hte kit last Thursday and found half an hour on Saturday to fit it to the door carrier. Dead easy - hooked the cables into the sliders and round three pulleys, clipped the sliders on the runners, wound the cables round the drum and put a clamp round it to hold it in looseley. Pulled on the wires and used a mole grip at the final pulley to hold the wire and keep the springs tensioned and then gently levered the wire over the last pulley.

I then cut the antivibration rubber sheathing off the old wires and fitted it to the new ones with PTFE tape. All done in about 20 minutes.

Then Saturday night got the trim off, the old carrier off and the new on in and fitted. Lots of High Temperature grease and spray grease and it works a treat. Just need to get the trim back on now and grease up the drivers side!

Feels like a new car again!

You know your stuff, Briskodian, I'll give you that!

Glad you got it sorted so easily.
