A bit smoky?

Featured Replies

Hi guys, I have recently purchased a Polo Gti instead of my Fabia which was just taking too long!

I have a slight problem with smoke, I can't say it happens a lot and as far as I can tell I am not using excessive oil but I have noticed the odd puff of smoke from the exhaust when accelerating hard, it looked more black (fuelling) than Blue (turbo) and my exhaust tips seem to get carbon'd up quite quickly

Car is standard at the moment

Anyone else noticed this?

Seems to only be apparent when I really floor it and the supercharger really kicks in

Running rich/lean maybe? One of the two causes sooty deposits? Can't remember now, although this is my first petrol car for a good few years :)

Been a PD130 man for 7 years, odd petrol car for a few months in-between never had carbon deposits either, although having said that, they were NA engines.

Some forced induction cars do puff a tiny bit of smoke; doesnt necessarily mean there is ought wrong with it. If youre concerned get it checked out. Also make sure your filling it with decent quality (ie not supermarket) fuel,95RON is fine but 98 is best and is whats recommended. Could possibly be an issue with the air flow meter?

I always put 98 in as I know the engine runs much better with it in. Only think I can think is I drive it like a granny most of the time then go quickly occasionally so I might be building some carbon up

I do get a touch of smoke when i boot mine and my exhaust tips get carbon'd up quite quickly to, so don't think you have to much to worry about

If you worried, give it to the dealer, its whats the warranty is for.

Keep us posted

stu. cant believe u bought the polo :( dissapointed in you :giggle:

Sorry Ash, I turned to the dark side after the dealer and Skoda was so unreasonable with the time delays!

Very happy with the Polo though

If it's new with low miles, the pistons and rings won't have bedded in yet and a carbon seal will not have formed. Driving it gently will allow oil to slowly build up in the cylinders and exhaust and it's probably this you can see being burnt when you do give it some power and revs. If you drive it like a granny it may never bed in so make sure you do give it plenty of work to do as per the instructions in the manual for 'running in'. You want the engine and oil to get nice and hot too before you 'work it'.

Agree with the above, warm it up as per the oil temp not water and open it up a bit. I am building my revs up gradually over the first 1000 miles or so.

Now that's a good looking car IMO  just a shame VW don't do it in more varied colours!

I don't know if reading this thread has done it, as I haven't noticed before, but mine smoked today! A learner was driving, so it had been driven gently for about an hour, then we exited a roundabout onto a 70mph dueal carrigeway, and I was watching a car comming in fast behind us, as my learner accelerated (only moderatley, no changing down of gears, overtaking car got past easy) just "normally" and noticed a puff of black/grey smoke out the exhaust! only for a second like, but it was there...

Happns with the Ibiza FR/Cupra 20v T cars as well - been on a few rolling roads and its not uncommon for them to spit a bit out the back :)
