Rattle from OSR over rough tarmac

Featured Replies

LOL. I have ruled out the possibility of it being caused by wildfowl ;)

Tracked down to something behind the plastic trim, above and behind the rear O/S seatbelt. I've pulled some of the trim out, but seems to have got worse! Seems a tricky piece of trim to remove emoticon-0114-dull.gif

Seriously doing my head in now, especially considering the effortlessly smooth nature of the road network emoticon-0108-speechless.gif

Have you had some one else drive your car whilst you are in the back listening? It could help to locate the noise - or on the other hand NOT! This happened to me in my Golf. Annoying rattle over bad road surfaces. No identifiable causes. Got my mate to drive me around with me in the back (weird feeling that was!), but no noise. Dropped him off. On way home noise returned. It seemed that the weight of a person on the back seat was enough to stop the noise. Checked everythign from seats to rear shocks/springs. All A-OK. Weird huh?

Weird indeed. I certainly feel your pain!

Not done exactly as you describe, but have had someone else listening while I've been driving. And now identified it to that area.

Now knowing that, I still can't work out what is causing it! Hopefully fully removing the section of trim will help identify. Sounds like two surfaces (possibly plastic) knocking together.

As I've loosened the trim in that area (but not been able to remove it completely) I think it's worse, as the trim is now sitting further out and the sound is being amplified (I think! emoticon-0112-wondering.gif)

Cheers,

Steve.

I also seem to have a squeak noise comin from the drivers side rear, I was only commenting how quiet it was in the octavia and then a few days later this started. I need to find out what it is, will try everything that's been mentioned in here

Wardy, have you solved the noise problem yet. Mine has returned with added volume and is even more annoying.

Nope, has got worse as well. Convinced its in the section behind the offside rear seat. Along the section where the parcel shelf connects in.

I've nearly completely removed the section of trim (triangular section) in that area, so will see if that's helped anyway when I'm out in the morning.

I know it has been mentioned before but have you eliminated the plastic trim around the high level brake light - mine is fine until the sun gets on it and I drive on other than really smooth road surface. It can be really noisy and the sounds seems to be coming from everywhere else until someone in the back presses on the plastic trim and that stops it. Next time the car is in the dealers going to mention it but in the meantime try sticking black insulation tape around the trim and see if the noise stops. If that doesn't stop the noise you can you can look elsewhere and you can peel off the tape.

That's an odd quote you've got there - I didn't say all of that ;)

Yes, completely eliminated the high-level brake light. The issue has now been confirmed to be inside the rear wheel arch (thanks to help from Mikeholroyd yesterday). With all the trim/carpet removed from around the rear offside area of the boot, you can feel from inside the boot that something's hitting the metal of the wheelarch from the outside. So I've at least confirmed that the issue is not within the car. So I'll try to have the wheel off one night this week and investigate the area further - see if I need to replace the arch liner.

Cheers,

Steve

Tracked down, and solved, hopefully, earlier today.

Will post back with more info in a few days, when I've confirmed.

I've had this for 18 months -drove me nuts ; a clacking rattling noise induced by short undulations - cross hatching really triggered it off. Back to agents 4-5 times - damper replaced & various other. Turned out to be Brake caliper / carrier / pins. These were loose, worked fine but rattled. I would not have believed such an item could be so annoying. Agents eventually replaced carrier & pins on caliper & checked all was tight. Completely gone!!

I had a look round and also found something odd. In this case it was nearside rear. The bit of "fixed" seat upholstery that goes between the seat boack and the rear edge of the door was loose. It has never been touched AFAIK, but it was able to pull down just like the seat back, though quite separate from it. (A lot of wires and other bits behind it!)

It didn't seem to have any kind of fixing, then I noticed some kind of thick "wire" bracket sticking backwards out of the foam it is made of, and a metal gee-gaw on the body metalwork. I found that when the bit of upholstery was pressed into position, then really pressed hard just below this bracket thingie, it clicked into place, though is very easy to pull forward again.

Thing is, when it was not pressed hard into place, but just pushed into position, it could make a metallic knocking noise between the two metal bits mentioned.

Anyone else come across this?

On my hatchback the rear fixed seat shoulders have come loose on both sides even though nobody sits in the back. I think the mere action of folding the rear seats has caused this. So far I have not been able to "click" them back into position. This may be the source of the dreadful metallic vibration noise that gets worse every time I use the car. I've never had so much noise from a car that's only 18 months old. On the otherhand my mate's 5 yr old Octavia estate makes not a squeak. Maybe FL models are built down to cost rather than upto (previous Skoda) standard.

Tracked down to a loose suspension component. Tightened, and the issue has now gone away.

Booked in on Saturday at the place where the suspension was fitted, for a thorough check-over of the rest of the setup, for peace of mind.

Wardy, I bet you are pleased that was solved. I look forward to my car being rattle free although I expect I'll have got rid of it before then!

Like you wouldn't believe! (well probably, you would!)

Journeys are now a pleasure again emoticon-0148-yes.gif

Sorry to dig up an old thread but I have exactly your problem and pretty convinced its the shock/suspension area too. When you tracked down the issue was it something that you thought "I really shouldn't have driven with that loose"? Got to go somewhere tomorrow and kind of need the car but nervous about driving it if its suspension related.

Cheers

No probs - it was one of the bolts holding the damper in place, within the offside (driver's side) rear wheelarch.

If you take off the wheel, and take out the archliner (several Torx screws but not too difficult) you'll then be able to check it over.

Without scaremongering, if I'd known that was the actual problem, I would have checked it out at lot sooner! But hindsight's a wonderful thing and it didn't seem to me to be an obvious issue with suspension fitment. Especially as the suspension setup was new and should have been fitted correctly!

Hope this helps.

Thanks mate, left it at home in the end. I just need some daylight when I'm not in work to take a look. Sounds like its inside but had all trim out and definitely under the arch. So I'm hoping its as simple as yrs. Thanks again for the reply.

Mine was only apparent on rough roads/tarmac, but that's all too common these days. Got to the point that I'd exhausted all other internal areas, for where the noise could be coming from, much like you have by the sounds of it.

I had a mate in the boot listening over the wheelarch with all the boot trim removed, to finally confirm that the sound was coming from there.

Get it jacked up, wheel and archliner off and hopefully you'll be able to solve it. Think I have some photos somewhere of the problem which I can dig out, for you to compare with.

Great thanks. Mine noticeable on those type of roads too, but getting worse so need to fix it before driving again I suspect. I had my dad drive my car with me in the boot too, looked ridiculous, but I definitely now know the noise is from the wheelarch!!

Just thinking, on the estate I think the rear suspension arrangement is slightly different, so the mounting for damper may be different from the hatch.

But still reckon that's your problem!

I'm sure it's in that area just a case of whether its as simple to fix!!
