Thinking of purchasing Octavia

Recommended Posts

Thanks for the welcome guys!

I have the option of the 1.6 TDI in Diesel, but its only S and SE, no Elegance, if i want the Elegance in the estate then its the Petrol 1.8....

I have the Insignia on test today, its the 2.0, and its got a bit of pull, but not that much, and anything less would be terrible for a car of that size, and i can only get the 1.8 in this......and they decide to give me the 2.0 to demo!!

My fuel is paid so don't need to worry about that aspect.

I must say though that this Mazda 6 i have is super quick, i've had it for a few months now and it still makes the stomach rise up when you put the pedal to the metal - i used to have the RS Turbo Escort and Fiesta years ago back in the 80's/90's and reminds me of those days again!

lol @ lol - how has he missed this?

Can't you get diesels or is the 1.8tsi the only choice? Also can you not get the VRS?

One thing is for sure, the build quality and interior plastics blow Mazda out of the water. As for the 1.8 Insignia i here nothing but bad things about the lack of power and appauling fuel consumption.

Depends how many miles you do a year and if your fuel is paid! You will be looking at high 30's low 40's for the tsi and easy 50's on the 140CR diesel and 45-50 on the 170CR diesel

Pretty much can't go wrong with any engine in the range. I used to drive a 2.0 Mazda 6 at my old work and it was like a kinder egg inside and also gutless!

I had a 1.8 insignia saloon for a hire car 9 months ago, and thought it was broken. Absolutely gutless, as auto express said - doesnt have enough power to pull itself along. Steer well clear.

I have the 2.0tsi, which uses the same basic engine, and is fantastic. Ive also read many good reports about the 1.8 tsi, and yes the performance figures are for real.

Lets face it youre going to get a VAG group car, with Audi / VW tech and finishes.

Dont be put off by the badge, I thought that image had been shed a few years back.

Try it, I bet you'll be impressed.

Thanks mate, got it coming for a demo next week in a hatchback version, but it is the 1.8TSI Petrol in Elegance trim so will be a good demo i'm sure! Can't Wait!

Go for the TSI then as you will only be disappointed with the 1.6 after the TD in the Mazda....especially as you have a fuel card :giggle:

I've not even ran my CR in yet & it flies. I cant get over how well it hugs the corners/roundabouts. If you had a nippy car before you'll be no worse off with the Octavia. B)

I took what I thought was one of our faster company pool cars out for a journey this week & it seems so weak comapred to the vRS i'm getting so used to. :giggle: Space wont be an issue the back end is like a cave !

Have a chat with a dealer & see if they can do you a loaner for the weekend. Just bear in mind the wait for a CR is quite long unless you can find one in the country (like a cancelled order), September is cutting it fine. Mine took 5 months, ordered it at Xmas.

Good luck & happy hunting

Cheers mate, what is the CR?

Cheers mate, what is the CR?

CR is Common Rail. It is what the VAG diesels are now - they used to be PD (Pumpe Deuse). The CR's are more petrol like through the rev range (still only go to 4.5k though) and are a lot quieter.

Welcome to Briskoda.

I doubt very much if you will be disappointed with the Octavia, as yes they have come a very long way!

I jumped ship from BMW to Skoda 6 1/2 years ago after many of their 3 series (including the E30 M3), this is my 3rd Skoda in a row (Octavia MKI, Superb MKI and now a Superb MKII estate).

The only thing IMO that lets the Octavia down is the rear legroom (the mahoosive boot robs the rear passengers of a bit of their comfort) if the rear legroom is not an issue due to very young kids then it will be ideal, if however you find it a bit cramped in the back then take look at the Superb and you will be amazed at the rear legroom! this was the reason I went from an Octavia to a Superb.

Thanks mate, my children are 7 and 10, so won't be an issue.

I know what you mean about the Superb though, i sat in the front of one the other day in a showroom, the interior was stunning, and when i turned around to look in the back passenger area it brought a big smile to my face, it was like a cinema room!!! I would have got the Superb but they only have it on my list in a 1.4 and i understand the enging isn't powerful enough for that size car?

Hi guys.

Therefore, i'm looking seriously at the Octavia Estate 1.8 TSI Elegance, with the 160BHP and 0-60 in 7.9 seconds, this car seems to good to be true?

Anybody on here have one? I've got the hatchback 1.8 TSI Elegance coming next week for a 3 day demo, really looking forward to it.

Is the 1.8 TSI really that quick? How can the estate be 7.9 seconds 0-60 whereas the Honda Civic 1.8 SI does 0-60 in 8.9 seconds? It doesn't seem possible?

Hi,

I have a 1.8 TSI Octavia hatch (about a year now). I have not taken any sprint times etc, but it's quite punchy and not obviously short on power. The torgue comes in very low so you can just potter around below 2,500 revs most of the time. It feels quite a lot like a diesel, but no short first gear and it revs cleaner and longer. It doesn't quite have the big mid range thump a BMW 320d has, but that's not a fair comparison.

Not sure what the deal is on your fuel, but I am getting 41 MPG indicated on a mix of Motorway and city driving 2/3rd Motor way (in SE so not free flowing).

When you test drive it make sure you try it on a poor motorway surface as road roar can be a problem and is for me the only niggle that spoils the experence.

I would and do recommend Skodas to everyone. I have run company cars now for the last 9 years and im on my 4th Octavia.

I ran a Civic for the 1st 20 months and it was ok.

Then i went for the Octavia 1.9TDi and although only a 90 bhp it was a great car after 20 months and 80k no problems.

The 2nd was a 130 TDi and that was so much fun and with the 6 speed box very flexible again 80k in 20 months no problems.

Then the MK2 Octavia TDi 90 BHP and again a great car with loads more room You can fit 6 foot doors in the back without moving the front seats These were all Hatchbacks as well. 20 months and 80k again no problems.

I then went for a 118D BMW to get a tax break and it wasnt a patch on the Octavia.

So I am back with Skoda again and I went for the 1.8TSi Elegance Hatch. Superb motor very flexible and can catch most things when you press on a bit.

Goes well but hit 4k and it flies.

Test drive one you will not be disapointed and at the end of the day its an Audi with a Skoda badge on it.

  • 5 months later...

Hi Guys,

Update: I ordered the Skoda Octavia 1.8 TSI Estate a few months ago now and i'm taking delivery of it on Tuesday!!

It has been ready for delivery for a few weeks now, however unfortunately a roof panel of a coach decided to blow off the other morning and came hurtling towards me whilst in the fast lane of a motorway and caused damage to my Mazda 6 company car, so that had to be repaired first before the new car being swapped over (they are lease cars).

Cant wait to get the Skoda, have already made enquiries yesterday regarding a dog guard for the back (£109 fitted) and a thick rubber mat for the floor space in the back to stop the dogs slipping around and it can be jetwashed down if required (about £50.00), all i need now is a way to stop my dogs becoming stuck to the back window when i pull away with the 160 horses this car lets out!! :)

Will post up some piccies when it arrives :)

P.S. Any of you guys know better costs for the above accessories?

Welcome to the club, There are quite a few options on the mats side. Have a look at this thread. Everything from a standard liner to a padded play space for your dog.

Got me car today, and boy is it fast!!!

Can't believe the engine on this car (1.8TSI), i've driven some fast cars in my years, the Fiesta and Escort RS Turbos of the 90's, Alfas, etc., however this car is fast no matter what, but when you then factor in that its an estate car, well, i can now have my cake and eat it! :)

Drives really nice, really light on the steering, smooth and quiet engine, good visibility, the large rectangular rear view mirror coupled with the rectangular rear window provides good visibility, unlike the rear window of the Insignia Estate that i test drove, which was like looking down a tunnel, due to the rounded top corners of the window, and also terrible side view/blind spots.

You don't even realise you are driving an estate car.

However, if i'm critical, i would say that it IS noticeable where SKODA have cut corners on the interior, for example the window buttons, pedals, seat adjustment handle, the sunglasses flap ontop of the dashboard etc., and also the centre console could have done with being a little more upmarket, however apart from that i think the car is great, and i'm very happy with my choice.

That engine will certainly keep me entertained for the next 4 years! :)

You've made a great choice. I've had my Octavia since May and still look forward to driving it every day. I too used to have a Mazda 6 and the one thing I miss (and it honestly is the only thing!) is the stereo. Apart from that, the Octavia is an awesome car.

Enjoy. :)

Know what you mean by the stereo compared with the Mazda, although its perfectly good, and if you hadn't anything to compare it against you would think it was really good, its not 'as good' as the Mazda, was listening to a local readio station this morning and the guy and woman presenter sounded completely different people!!

However, the speed and sheer performance of the car far outweighs any slight difference in the voices from the stereo, bearing in mind what the 1.8tsi is like, i would love to drive a VRS as that must be blinking awesome!

P.S. Two questions:-

Can i put the 1.8tsi through a car wash, it has a bee sting arial on the roof?? Do i need to unscrew it first? Will it break in the car wash?

What is that piece of clear plastic strip jutting out from the side of the right hand pillar running from the roof to the top of the bonnet, it sticks out and runs accross the window by about 3-4 inches?

Car wash is swearing on here. Get a bucket, a wash mitt and some decent shampoo and do it yourself.

Piece of plastic is a ticket holder.

It is! I found the Mazda lacking in poke as it was a very peaky engine which lacked torque. The VRs is a huge improvement. It brings a smile to my face every day. I cannot resist giving the accelerator a good poke on every journey. Obviously, I do not exceed the speed limit.

And the ticket holder is really useful. A nice touch.

Ah - Ticket Holder, why didn't i think of that! :)

Re accelerating the VRS every time you drive it, i'm like that with this 1.8TSI, second from 1500rpm all the way up to nearly 5000rpm then straight into 3rd and back through the rev range, makes you laugh at the thought of it being a Skoda! :)

Get TWO buckets one to wash one to clean the mitt and you won't get swirl marks from a gritty sponge.
