Want to go big power, what upgrades first

Featured Replies

Hi all, I have a fairly standard octavia vrs at the moment bar some suspension bushes, getting it mapped this week but in future I would like to go down the bigger power route think id be really happy with 270+ from it.

What should I upgrade before whacking the garret gt28rs turbo on it and mapping that, obviously fmic and other obvious engine upgrades but I would want to make sure the drive train and suspension are up to the job first and foremost along with the brakes. What is the max the internals would take? I have heard 300bhp but think that sounds a little high, i have rebuilt parts of engines in the past so shouldn't be too hard to get forged internals in it.

My diff is whining a bit so I want to upgrade to a quaife lsd which is not a problem, but what other components are ideally suited for coping with this power, will the standard braking at 312mm be big enough for the job or will i need a big brake set up? In terms of suspension im in the process of ordering a rear anti roll bar but im still on the standard shocks and springs so it is beginning to feel a little well used.. are weitec coilies going to be okay?

any advice or help would be brilliant!

many thanks,

lew

I looked into this myself.

It's going to cost you ALOT to do properly. Personally I'd save up for something else!

£2k+ just for hybrid turbo, fmic and associated bits & bobs on a car that's not worth much more isn't worth it IMO (lost to much ££'s on cars over the years doin this)

I've got coilovers and other bits, so would prob cost you more.

as the others said, it will cost LOTS, really you need to uprate everything suspension and brake wise in order to benefit and use the 270bhp plus properly.

My car is at the stage of lsd and big turbo, which were my plans, but the constant drain in time and money means i am giving up and going back to old school vws instead. See my ad for some of the suspension mods required as the stock vrs doesnt handle well, let alone with 270 plus bhp.

To answer your question, weitecs are a good budget coilover setup, but are a bit uncomfy long term, and a little crash, kw v2s or v3s are a better long term bet as are stainless and have better shock units with more adjustability.

As said already, it costs a lot to do it properly.... Take a read through my sig.

I have to say though, their is something special about a 'high' powered Skoda.... 'Reverse snobbery' when you blow away something which cost £££££££ more!!!

To out costs into context, I've probably spent close to £20,000 on my car, I bought it new with a fee optional extras so roughly it's cost me £35,000 gross. But, to get a car that is as fast/powerful as mine (now) I'd need to spend considerably more, at least double that!!!!

Horses for courses.....

Steve

PM me if you need and specific details and I'll be happy to advise you further.

You dont need that much power mate,(would be nice tho)

tbh if you want a hoot just remap your car to 220

Turboback zorst

Air filter+bigger hole into the box or CAI

Forge 007p/Bailey DV30

FMIC

LSD

R32 FARB

25/28mm RARB

Weitec GT/ KWv3

TT/S3/LCR Hubs

Cast wishbones+ caster bushes/anti lift

Ball joints

LCR/R32/S3 steering Rack(unless you have ESP iirc)

Porsche or LCR brembos or others.

thats a nice start. This will make it handle spot on.

Unless the car is insured for an agreed value ie 35K, I would'nt dare drive it on a public in case some muppet ran into it and wrote it off.

Bill.

If you want big power sell it and buy an M3/S4

... but these days you can buy an M5 for sub £8K, that doesn't even get you're engine modded ....

If I where starting now, I'd buy a Noble M12 GTO3R and spend the spare cash on a luxury hotel alpine driving trip

thanks everyone, i know it is a lot of money and have taken it into consideration but the car just does everything so well, it would be a shame to leave it for something else like a bmw.. imo i'd rather spend cash on the skoda which i plan to keep for a long time because its pretty mint and make an awesome sleeper over a period of time than just buy something fast, also at my age buying a fast car s4 etc isn't easy to get insured on lol

If you aren't easily getting insurance for an S4 then a modified Skoda is going to be just as bad :D

Big power is a serious game and very costly, but one day I am sure I will reach the point when a big turbo will be on the cards

The modding route I have taken is "Mod it when it breaks or if you find a bargain!" (apart from the remap+007p)

LPG was the first mod as I do a lot of mileage (I am a super Pikey)

then I had a good deal on 17" Spiders + caliper carriers + 6 coil packs (sold the 16's at a profit :D)

when the disks needed changing I swapped to the 312's

any pikey mods can be performed at leisure due to the nature of very low cost, so I have done dogbone, airbox, SMIC Grill, Wheelarch, n249 bypass

I have a set of TT coolers ready to go in which came with the cross bar and all the other pipework for a very sensible price (less than most standard coolers are going for on ebay :D)

Gearbox was a big "Mod it when it breaks" but was a definate improvement

.

I always say therez no big whoop if sumin like a scoobie of evo , or if u had a tasty porsche when you smoke something somewhere

smoke what....ganja? :p :D

.

Modding to the level Billy suggests by the methods Karl suggests is a logical way to go.

The problem is the engine though. To support a better turbo (Garrett / IHI ) you're going to need more displacement.

This is expensive. Given what you can buy these days, just not worth it anymore.

Two years ago, when I decided to go down the GT2860RS route it made economic sense, given the then cost of other 4x4 cars with the power to weight ratio I was after.

Today I don't think it does make economic sense to tune a 20v engine.

i have a few nice parts for sale, you have a PM.

I'm making the most of having a fooking rapid motor, give it a few years and all cars will be 'data tagged', so spirited driving shall we say will be impossible!!

As for spending money... It's a slippery slide..... Having just spent a tidy some only last night on a rather sexual Ross Machine Racing inlet manifold.

Still works out cheaper than buying a 911 turbo...

If you fancy ......

sorry i though thats what you meant... that line didn't make much sense other than the smoking something bit ;)

Octi MKI VRS hmmmm.....JBS Auto Designs had one pushing out around 600bhp!!!...not cheap.......mind you their custom manifolds are very nice!!!!!! Plus they also do everything else....take a look!! B)

http://www.jbsautodesigns.co.uk/

JBS are pants, don't touch their cr*p with a bargepole

I know, I've got one of their engines and mani's

Their mani's are made by a us outfit, as are all the other components they claim as JBS

( all fixed now, just cost even more $ :( )

Jabbasport are the folks you want to talk to (their customer service speed is pretty poor though :( )

Can buy my IHI power'd 325bhp Octavia vrs for 5k and save some money if you want? lol

you got proper brakes on that car yet andy?

.

aha !!! i see............. good old iphone strikes again emoticon-0136-giggle.gif

what i meant in a quick recap was......... theres nothing shocking or ooooooooo about a fast evo, scoobie or porsche etc emoticon-0143-smirk.gif

now i shall go edit emoticon-0112-wondering.gif

Please don't explain yourself any more you are making it worse..... :giggle:
