Air Con stopped working halfway through journey

Featured Replies

My air con has decided to pack up, having only had it serviced at Skoda two weeks ago.

It was working fine, and then just suddenly started blowing warm, damp smelling air. The button was still lit, and I had it on re-circ, but it made no difference with the air con turned on or off, the air was the same temperature.

Ill arrange for it to go back to the dealer, as obviously they've just serviced it so really they should sort it, but I was wondering if there is anything I can try, or look for which could suggest what the problem might be?

It's a 2004 vrs, not climate control.

Any help would be most appreciated - can't believe its decided to pack up just as I have to drive for 3 hrs in a heat wave!

Do the engine fans work?

Haven't checked, I presume you mean the ones on the rad in the bay?

Yep, those are the ones.

The controller that controls them also controls the ac pump, so if the fans aren't working, it will overheat and the controller will turn the pump off.

At least it does on the octavia anyway - I presume the fabia will be the same or very similar.

You are correct, fans are not turning at all, even when I started it from cold just now. Is this an expensive fix? What needs to be changed and how? Cheers :-)

Check all fuses, including the link fuses on top of the battery, look for hairline cracks on those.

Done that, none appear to be blown :-(

Our SDI went in for this today.

Turns out the system just needed re gassing.

The previous time we got it done at kwik fit cos it was cheap but it hasn't

worked properly since about a month after they regassed it. (Yes, yes I know :dull: )

Took it HERE this time and felt much happier as I've used these

guys before and they've been great so far

They checked first for leaks using dye. Then regassed and everythings cool again.

I don't know how true this is but the guy at the garage said that the

system kind of shuts down when it detects the refrigerant is low to prevent

further damage. Kind of made sense but as I say I've no idea if its true tbh.

Seems like a sophisticated system for a budget car but perhaps all A/C has that feature?

Techie (Ross) would know more about this one I reckon.

Word round these parts is that he's a Skoda god!! :giggle:

Yes if the pressure switch detects low pressure it does switch off.

However it's now illegal to regass a system with R134a that has a leak but most machines shouldn't gas unless a full vacuum and test have been done.

What I don't understand though is that it was regassed and fully serviced at a main dealer, only 2 weeks ago. It worked alright before that, maybe I shouldn't have ad it done lol. I'll take it back and let you know how I get on

  • 4 weeks later...

Right, got this checked out finally, and turns out the compressor is gone at a cost of £700 from Skoda. Are the compressors available separately, and has anyone ever replaced one? I am aware the gas needs to be removed, so possibly could be done somewhere, do the work then re-gas. How much work is involved?

Any help greatly appreciated!

A bit cheaper the the Main Dealer. I have just purchased one from Auto Air Parts (Genuine Hella)

Tried fitting a second hand one and that turned out to be defective wasting me the costs for labour and a re-gas :(

Cheers for the links buddy. I presume they are the same for all fabia mk1?

How much did labour and gassing cost you if you don't mind me asking?

Labour and two regassings came to £190, however this included fitting and removing a second hand pump which turned out to be knackered :wonder: . Hence my descision to buy and fit new pump.

Make sure that whoever fits it uses new O rings :)
