312 Brake Upgrade - real world improvement?

Featured Replies

I can remember on here a few years ago a debate about what differences larger brakes would do.

If you used the same tyres on the same bit of tarmac and the outside temperature was the same, then broke hard until the ABS started to cut in. Then there will not be any difference in stopping time/distance at all between standard and larger brakes. It is only the tyres that have contact with the tarmac and is only these that will ultimately make the difference.

However you will be able to stop faster with bigger brakes with the same brake peddle pressure. Also being larger they will have a larger surface area and therefore dissipate heat better which will help to prevent brake fade, but this can be easily cured with better performance pads, discs and brake fluid.

Well if that is all actualy true in practice, I'll have to use less brake peddle pressure to stop when driving normaly than I do now and the disks and pads should therefore last longer - so everyone's a winner !
