Heated mirror switch

Featured Replies

Still getting used to the Yeti after owning a Roomster.

Can anyone confirm the "action" of the heated mirror switch for me please? On the Roomster there was a positive "click" when switched on. The Yeti seems to float against what feels like a spring, is this npormal? It's not helped by there being no visual indication of it being ON.

Yes I think that is quite normal.

There was a lot of discussion on this last winter.

I always have mine switched off ,to save the heating elements .(unless they are needed in winter conditions.)

i agree. it springs round so the dot is at the 9 o'clock position when heaters are on.

my dealer told me it's best practice to switch off when mirrows have cleared as there's a risk of burning out the heater elements of left permanently on.

I think they turn themselves off after a set period or time or perhaps it is even temperature related? But yes I would agree, leave them in the off position if you can.

Not convinced you are right there James. There were several comments over the winter where owners found that the things stayed on permanently unless you turn the knob to OFF. My dealer said at the time that they were advising owners to turn the heater off as soon as mirrors had defrosed as, by March, he had alreday replaced 4 mirror glasses in which the heating elements had burned out after they had been left permanently on.

Now, I cant confirm if this is the case, but they dont appear to turn themselves off, as the rotary knob stays in position, so how would you turn them back on? I would have thought that if they turned off automatically after a set time, the knob would also reset, unless they are controlled by a thermostat, which I doubt.

I dont have a wiring diagram or access to a Skoda service manual, so it would be handy if you cound find the definitive answer!

It is by far THE most annoying "new" feature on VAG cars - this not switching off business. I've now started to move something from my door pocket to in front of the gear lever to remind me that the darn things are on! And even then I sometimes forget what this self made"signal" of mine means! Doh. On my Audi they came on when you switched the rear window demister on and thus also automatically switched off when that turned off. If the mirrors were still not clear you just switched the demister on one more time. Job done. So why change it to this awful method?! If it ain't broken...

As to the springy action: I think they can be switched by going from the L or the R side of the knob hence not having a positive action at that spot.

James,

they don't switch off!

Someone here was looking at an easy way of fitting a warning light into the circuit, but nothing happened. I'm sure that all it needs is a small multi-voltage LED in parallel with the heater pad but haven't worked out how to get to the wiring without taking it apart or the wiring colours.

I wonder if it could be done off the fuse?

Thanks for the replies, I'm glad it's "normal" but agree that it's a very poor design. The lack of an indicator was a bit of a pain on my Roomster and I would have thought that it would have been fixed by now.

I was in contact with a Briskoda member who was working on a way to install an indicator but I've lost his details.

It is not a Škoda design fault though. This is a standard button used by VAG in for example the Golf VI too... So blame zeGermans!

Hi Fred - that may have been me! I have the circuit worked out - VERY SIMPLE - VERY INEXPENSIVE - Just have to have time to get the mirror off and install everything, taking photographs on-the-way for a guide in the YETI technical guides section. We are in the middle of moving home in about ten days time., so things are pretty hectic!!!

I promise I will do the guide as soon as time (swMbo) permits. Regards ..........Tony

Hello Tony

I'm sure it was you now you say you're moving home, you sent me a message telling me so. I did reply but understand that you are in the middle of a very stressful time.

From the replies to my original query you can see that your report will be eagerly awaited by many people. Keep up the good work.
