My Fabia Misfire

Featured Replies

Hi there,

I started a topic earlier with an engine management fault, and i have just about managed to fix it. However now I would like some advice for my misfire. The car is constantly misfiring, on acceleration & on in idiling. I know that everyone with Fabia's seem to have this problem.. Does anyone know how to fix it? Thanks guys, Alex

Rough idling is normal for the mpi. Something to do with the idle being kept low for emissions purposes.

In some cases the ECU will detect misfiring and give you an error code.

Start with basics. Spark plugs are worth changing if you don't know they have been done.

What is the mileage? Is there a rattling noise from driver's side of the engine? Has the timing chain be changed at any point?

The mileage is 82,000. The car was sold with having 'just been serviced' but to be honest the dealer was dodgy as hell so I dont think this was done. I don't think the timing chain has been changed either. There is no engine management light on (as previously) so I don't know about any fault codes as I haven't taken it anywhere since the engine management was sorted. But the last time i had it scanned there were no fault codes (after changing my air flow sensor). I will change the spark plugs as you have suggested, Is the misfire something I should worry about or just ignore? I have had the car 4 months now and have been quite happy ignoring it so far, but want to get all the problems fixed on the car prefereably. I don't know if you have any knowledge about this, but my car has some seriously flat acceleration. its always so hessitant when accellerating and although it hasnt been dangerous it does really worry me. Do you have any knowledge about this?

Thanks so much for your help, Alex

It may be worth cleaning the throttle body also, and having a throttle body adaptation run with diagnostic equipment. I'd check the air filter to see how clean that is. At 82k miles it's probably due its second one if it hasn't already been done recently.

Okie doke, I will do those jobs aswell, However i think i will leave the timing chain for the moment, as thats an expensive job and I don't know if I will keep the car or not if i keep having problems. What is the throttle body? Neither me nor my father know what that is.

It's the modern equivalent of a carburettor. It takes air from the air filter box and the plastic cover above is held on with 3 screws behind the engine. It's basically a valve which controls air flow, and is a round thing with pivots either side, which opens and closes to let air in the engine. Halfords sell a carburettor and fuel injection cleaner in a spray can. If you do as suggested on the can and spray with engine running you will get over-fuel error codes, but it doesn't seem to do any harm otherwise.

It's under the black plastic at the top of the photo (ignore the yellow circle)

So it is under the air intake pipe at the top of that picture? Is it next to the air flow sensor/map/manifold sensor. As I accessed that yesterday by undoing three screws and lifting the air flor pipe.

Yep just up from the Map sensor. Once the big black plastic thing held on with three screws is lifted off you can see the round plate (butterfly valve) which is the bit that benefits from the cleaning :)
