I've montified my headlights

Featured Replies

...besides the bad joke since I saw the first concept Fabia at the Geneva show wearing black headlights I always wanted to take a stab at making mine look the same. Taking though more cues from the Monte Carlo headlights (chrome blinker, chrome ring. etc) I first tried to open up a set of originals but there was no way they would open due to the silicone used to seal the headlight. At the end I managed to track down a company (DEPO) that specializes in making a huge range of cheap copies of original headlights. I was afraid that the headlights would be, well to be honest, crap in construction and finish but to my surprise I found only minor differences between them and those were only regarding construction in relation to the Hella originals. The only big difference was that the DEPO ones use a simple silicone which when heated up becomes soft and allows you to pull the headlight apart with no much fuss.

Next step was to mask and paint and when all was done I simply put everything back together. Fitted them on the car with no problems, adjusted and aligned. I hope they stand the test of time.

Below a few pics with the final result - hope you like. ;)

A great end result!!

Very nice job  they look very good B)

Compliments the car well

Excellent. Looks ace.

WOW What a great looking car you can see a lot of hard work's gone into that well done

I have just replace one of my headlights with a 'Depo' one. The thing looksed very simular to the original one, but I wouldn't say the quality is the same compared to the Hella one. Having said that, I saved my self at least £40 from one from the dealer and was just a little more than I would have paid at Skospares (if they had one).

Your headlights look good, I like them. I have seen on flebay you can buy black headlights for the mk1 and I know 'Depo' do them too, however I don't think you can buy them for a Mk2.

Thanks guys - I'm very pleased how they came out since this is my first diy on the car. :) To be honest the headlight shape is the main weakness with the pre facelift and only way to trick the eye is to make the headlight blend with the rest of the body.

Of course Depos cannot be compered to hella ones and I think time will be the judge as to how good they are but at close inspection with the original I couldn't tell the difference except the printed logos on the back and the color of the mechanism on the inside which is white plus some differences with the clips of the bulbs. I will surely enjoy them for as long as they last, that's for sure ;)

looks great, how about some eye brows

Funny enough I've got a set which I bought ages ago from milotec. Not sure now that the headlights are black that they make any big difference. I will place them on and see how they look but still I'm not keen on sticking stuff on the headlight.

you can use strong double sided tape, if u don't like them that can come off without any damage to the lense

Looks ace that mate, I'd say change the orange indicator bulbs for some Silvatecs

You are very right. I saw a member with a blue vrs/white alloys (can't remember name) that has installed silvatecs and I bought 2 sets last week. Hope they arrive soon :)
