Long ratios are good BUT

Featured Replies

It will take me a while to get used to the 3rd to 4th gap :D and sixth is SO long, I am finding using 5th at 60mph is easier! in 6th gear, 60mph (real) is only 1600rpm :D

The amusing thing is 6th being geared for 165mph @ 4500 revs! :D Doubt the aerodynamics will ever allow it to get to that haha!

gogog test top speed @ 4 am on motorway :p

I want a long 6th =(

There are only two 02M gearbox codes which have the longer ratios. There's about a dozen or more other codes which all have "normal" ratios.

I'll be finding out how good it is as heading up the M5 to Bristol on Saturday

There must be very few of us on here with the original box. An exclusive club B)

Think i`ve got the long box. Whats 80mph rev at? about 2000 rpm?

Yeah, sounds about right. Long box was only on the first 6 months or so of the Fabias I think. The donor stuff I used for my PD130 conversion came from an 04 plate (maybe a late one) and that was a shorter ratio box.

Mines a 53 plate, late 03 I think (from memory). When I change seems to drop it into the power just right tbh for the next gear

+1

80 mph, 2000rpm is what I get.

These old cars in't so bad. ;)

I've got the longer box too! 60mph = 1500rpm or so!

im assuming mine will be the same, '04 reg, il have a check when i go out :)

04 cars can be either.. Completely depends how long it sat before it was registered dude! (although, from what I've heard, they sold pretty quick in the 1st couple of years)

Mines 04, sold almost as soon as it shipped.. as a result it's got the short box.. Think 80's (speedo) around 2600 on mine.

Wish I could do 80 at 1600rpm lol! That must make a nice legal 70 off boost then? MPGBEE tastic!

New box is 80mph @ about 2400 revs

Old box is 80mph @ about 2000 revs.

The gap isn't "that" big, but sure noticeable, especially when you've driven your car with 4 years on the short box and then swap. :)

Can you get over 60mph now without needing 3rd then?

That would be rather handy at certain times...

You'll soon find out when he posts his next 0-60 times up lol

1st 2nd & 3rd are near as damnit the same. The jump to 4th is very noticeable though as it is a lot longer. Should mean quarter mile can be completed in 4th gear as it goes to about 110mph @ 4500 revs, so perhaps 115mph to the redline. I needed 5th in the old setup.

I have noticed after driving to Bristol and back on Saturday that with this longer box the car is more economical at 85mph than the old box was because its in an apparent "sweet spot" just above 2000rpm where it can utilise a little boost and the lower revs. However this is obviously illegal, so I tried 70mph dead for some time and it actually felt worse, almost lethargic at around 1800rpm. Going up any reasonable incline would really require 5th gear if I wasn't to push 6th a little too much.

So in short, long box is good for higher speeds. :D I may try using cruise @ 75mph on the next motorway run and see how she copes.
