Refurb or new wheels?

Looking to get my zeniths refurbished in either smoked or black chrome but prices are coming out inexcess of £300 for the set of 4.

So I started looking around at replacement wheels when I found these. I really like them and for a set of 4 they are £445 (not including tyres). My only concern is in the size they are listed as ET45 66.6 - which I presume is the centre bore, iirc the Octavia is 57.1???

I would say shop around for a better refurb price. There was a place in Brum doing wheels for £30 ea plus VAT which is probably too cheap. But you should be able to get them done for £50 ea plus VAT with a bit of shopping around and bartering = £240 inc.

Aftermarket wheels may be of a lesser quality than OE and remember that changing to non-standard wheels will affect your insurance premium too.

Some aftermarket wheels come with quite a large centre bore and use spigot rings to get the correct centre bore. These might be included in the fitting kit that the seller mentions, probably along with a new set of bolts (the OEM bolts are radiused, aftermarket wheels tend to need tapered bolts).

Thanks for all the responses thus far, with regards shopping around, I have and there are cheaper companies out there however when you take into account the added distance to travel (most want to keep the wheels for a few days) the saving is wiped out. Having said that the link from Peanut is mega cheap - £35 per wheel if I'm reading it right - has any one had experience of these?

I understand that aftermarket wheels especially at that price will not be as good quality and probably heavier which is a concern, although I have ran non OE wheels in the past and never had a problem.

Im taking mine to the wheel specialist to get them refurbed after I move house. Id rather spend a bit more and get them powder coated than possibly get them done on the cheap and have to do them twice. Ive had alloys refurbed on the cheap before and the finish was not very good so I ended up having them done again by another firm and having to pay twice to get them done. Bite the bullet and if it includes a strip/refit of the tyre and balancing, £300 is not that bad.

Indeed, a good refurb should be around £40-50. I wouldnt be paying any more.

While true for a standard finish, Pagey's looking for 'smoked or black chrome' which tends to be more, as there's more work involved.

My nearest TWS is in London so if I drop them off and return to pick them up it's in the region of 400 miles there and back twice, Lepsons (who quoted £65+VAT per wheel) are in Gillingham which is closer to me approx' half the distance. I have just emailed TWS for a quote, if it comes back under £270 for the set they have got the job.

Mr Pagey,....e-bay "18" Skoda Zenith Alloy Wheels " and you'll see a bloke selling these, unused but removed from cars that are having a wheel upgrade

they seem quite cheap and there's discounts for four or more wheels with center caps thrown in

TWS won't be, for an 18" and remove/refit tyre quote, it'll be nearer £400 I reckon. Then you just have to wait for them to email you a discount code :yes:

Best you can expect is 25% off a full set, which would bring it down to around £300.

Any others local that you probably wouldn't use, but who you could get quotes from? Then see if Lepsons will price match, for cash etc? :yes:

Hmmm - yes, a bit steep. That's the south for you too - Manchester TWS 'retail' price for 18s is £70+VAT, wheel removal/re-fit is £10+VAT.

So that's an extra £33.60 inc VAT before you've even started :S

I think I will stick to the Lepsons quote, maybe if I pester them I may get it a bit cheaper......apart from Gizmo68 who had a less than perfect time, I think they do a cracking job.

Prices and process look good.

I haven't used them, but did quote there prices to the Swindon Lepsons branch last year who then gave me a discount to there trade price on a refurb with them.

I think that dropped price from £53+vat per wheel to £45+vat for standard gloss black finish.

I guess it depends how busy they are as to whehter they are up for a bit of bartering.
