Should I buy a Type R ?

Featured Replies

I recently had a ride in a 54 reg civic R. V impressed with handling and performance. I know it's a different car from my VRS. Any thoughts from anyone who may have swapped from latest shape Type R? I'm not too bothered about fuel costs due to lowiish annual mileage. I like the VRS for all round practicality and performance. Anything I should watch out for? There are some examples for £11-13K 2009 model.

You're asking on a Skoda forum wether you should exchange your vRS for a Type R?

You're gonna get shot down in flames :D

They're dog slow and I for one would certainly not be changing for one.

It is a completely different car for a completely different driver. If you liek the VRS you may not live with the Type R for long. I had a drive of the older shape one a while ago and it was good fun but could not have lived with it every day. To get the best from it you have to rev it hard which would get tiring after a while. It also had a very firm ride which on UK roads would soon get painful. The gearing was also quite low so cruising at 70 meant higher than normal revs which seemed nosiy etc. The boot is not as big and only being 3 door makes access to the rear harder (and it is also more cramped back there. If all these things are not a problem then go for it.

get a vw r32

No, make Harry an offer for his vrs and take on the world

If its the new shape then the handling isnt as good as the previous version, its heavier and has the same HP :giggle: dont get me wrong i like them in the black or red but not for me it was one of a huge list it was quickly crossed off.

Stick with the 54 model. I had one for 4.5 years and loved that car. If I could afford to run one again I wouldn't hesitate.

Who said slow???? 0-60 in 6.5 seconds???? You can't be driving it correctly

They aren't equipped with anything spectacular, but if you get a nice exhaust and cai kit then it makes an awesome noise. Its all about revving the nuts off it and omg does it make you smile as you hit 8200 revs

As previously mentioned it is a completely different class of car, if it ticks the boxes for you then go for it. For me, the vRS gets my vote everytime, spacious, practical, understated and of course highly tuneable, no contest imho.

Compared to Harry's I would guess 6.5 seconds to 60 is like driving Miss Daisy! :giggle:

VTEC. All the lag with none of the boost.

Put it this way, my 1.4tsi fabia vRS demolishes type R's. They are only quick when at full revs. Get your vRS re mapped and you will no'longer be looking at type re for their performance.

Handling wise the type r is better, but its much harsher and more focused. My octavia like marries had all the chassis mode and I assure you it was awesome. Bet all round car I've ever had once nodded, and that's basing it off my track day hobby.

This sums up the type r power band

Whereas with a vRS

Stage 2+ remap £500

3" down pipe £500 (or decat oem downpipe for only £60)

Fuel pump £300

Intake £250

And you'll be running power like this, which believe me will keep you tucked in behind a focus RS 2.5t from a rolling start.

I had a 53 plate Type R (EP3) and loved it at the time. Yes you have to rev the nuts off it but that's part of the fun!

Some folk say the steering lacks feel but I didn't have any issues with it. The gearbox is fantastic and reliability was second to none. The only issue I had was a rattling heat shield!

If I didn't need the practicality of my VRS Octy, another Type R would be high on my list.

I also used to own a Type R. Was great fun and quick if kept on the boil. However, it was extremely tiresome on long runs, had a small boot, mpg wasn't great and the build quality was lacking. My current vRS is in a different league. Much more comfortable and practical, better mpg by some margin and lightly modded is massively quicker. Mine now has double the torque of tye Type R and as a result is far easier to drive quicker. My mums partner still had a Type R which I get to use on occasions and there really is no comparison.

Thank you to everybody who all gave valid opinions which confirmed what I have read or heard especially newer model vs older model. The VRS is a great allround package, better on economy and performance. than the Fords or BMW which I have owned. I am looking ahead to when my ownership threshold is reached. I normally keep a car for 3-4 years and it will soon be 4 years with this one. Then I want to make the right choice. I think SWMBO will need to be convinced as she thinks the Octy is

uncomfortable to sit in for long periods.

Like I said earlier if I could afford the running costs I would have this in a flash. I loved this car. The octavia is great, nice and laid back and with the remap picks up very well for a big car with originally only 105bhp.

On long runs the Civic was comfy although I had DC2 recaros in it. In 4.5 years I did about 50,000 miles and never had an issue with anything, the gears are brilliant and no gear box since has been able to touch it. I know you have to keep it in the red for it to move, but that was always the fun although pootling about in the summer with the exhaust popping away was great too.

Times change and second hand they are going pretty cheap. Have fun with one for a year just so you can say you did. Its not a turbo so cheap modding really isn't an option, but I can promise you when you hit just over 6k revs and feel vtec kick in and you keep your foot down until silly speeds around back roads you will love it, trust me

friend of mine had one, had it turbo charged but at the cost of £2500 it was an expensive mod, but running 300bhp made up for it especially whn the turbo kicked in then the vtec came in later on

depends if you really like lag and not a lot of kick?

Had one and found the driving position hellishly uncomfortable, there's a slight misalignment between the pedals, steering wheel hence arms and shoulders and seat hence legs and hips and I had to get shut after about 3 months. Plus I don't like have to rev the bejeezus out of a car to make it pull but that's just a personal thing ;)

Don't know about the Civic R but Autoexpress once had an Accord R as a long term test car and raved about it, except it went through front tyres like hot cakes.

If you really fancy a change I would forget the civic and look at the Integra. Totally different league. Limited slip, brembo's, more power (dc5) and considered the finest handling fwd car ever made.

considered but i thought the megane 225 proved otherwise?

Do agree though the teg is awesome and much more unique.

Evo did an article within the last 12 months I think where they tested about 10 cars considered to be the best handling fwd cars of all time. The DC2 won with nothing but praise. Either way, it goes and handles (and looks IMO) better than the civic and like you say is much more unique.

My bro's got An accord type R and it's awesome. A lot more comfortable than the civic.....and quicker!

My mate used to have a civic type R but got rid as on a spirited drive he was getting 8mpg and not a lot more going steady.

My bro's ATR was used by both mongoose and k&n as a guinea pig for there products (which he got free the Jammy git!)

And the noise it makes is so addictive :giggle:

They RR'd it and it made 232bhp and you can tell...leaves my mk1 vrs.

I'd definitely consider one or as others have mentioned the DC5.

I had a EP3 type R and always enjoyed the vtec. Found the car frustrating to drive at normal speeds though, so tended to drive everywhere like a tool. Before I got my VRS I test drove the new style type R, always thought it was a nice looking car. The ride quality was ridiculously harsh, that alone was enough to put me off. Even heard myself call it 'jap crap'. So glad I didn't buy one.

DC5 is great but I felt the EP3 was easier to drive as a daily car. My wife and I would swap so I got best of both worlds. Take it for a test drive, we are all different so at the end of the days it's whats best for you and your circumstances. I will get one again but only for weekends as I need a decent size car for my boy and good mpg getting to work
