A Mufflerectomy!

Featured Replies

Hello!

Ive finally decided that although my blue flame is jolly nice I must admit I do like the sound of a mufflerectomy! Once ive been paid I shall be going to my local garage to enquire about the cost of one and to get the miltek style twin tail pipe!

However what I would like to know is whats peoples opionions on these! For example the noise in the car over what rpm range. Ive also heard alot of people on other forums commenting on a snappier throttle response and a quicker spool up? Which seems alittle intresting as it is just a removal of one pipe fitted with another! And assuming there is no legality issues even when the new strictor guidlines will be in force next year. PLUS!! How much should I be paying for such a service?

I will ether keep my blueflame back box or sell it on depending on how dramatic the noise change is.

Any help given would be massively appreciated. Plus im sure its an excuse for a few to wack up some piccys and a tube linky ;)

Thank You

Ive got milltek 2.5" everything including decat but took the milltek backbox off and had that piece of art made up. it cost around £150 I think and does the owl/pidgeon/flutter/woo noise when you change gear really loud. If your cruzing its not very loud but when boost comes in its like thunder. It may not sound as good with the blueflame if its 2" or smaller than the milltek size but im sure it'll sound good. Trevorb333 has the same with a milltek sports cat and still makes all the noises  Be prepared for the most attention youve ever had and comments on how nice your dump valve sound :wonder: All the best

To be truthful I have come to the conclusion I perfer the look of the twin over the blueflame oval. And I can imagine alot of the comments and about dump valves on diesels. I will have to explain it doesnt have one....

I would keep the cat in place so I would assume it wont be as loud as the ones in the video :)

Thanks, I know lol.. all jokes aside xaosx got pulled over cause the police wanted to ask about his dump valve and hear it some more! I prefer the look of the blueflame but each to their own. I hope to see a video or two of then its done and some images of the tip

Wow that second vid sounds amazing. When he launches, so that's just a mufflerectomy with a cat in place or no cat? Could a standardish car sound like this?

Ps who is random chick in White dress? Lol

No cat's here. A standard car could do that noise yes. And that's my very random girlfriend!

Good work :)

What's annoying the cost it takes for just a wee bit of pipe in place lol otherwise I'd get it done :)

I phoned up the same place that Ross got his made and they wanted £200... I really can't justify that. It seems a LOT of money for a little pipe...

I agree, that is a lot of money, it cost me £65 at my local fabricators....

Couple of questions to clear up my confused mind (been a long day) can you do this op with a std back box and just use the tail pipe section for it?What bore size would be best for the pipe?

I bet I could make one for next to nothing, £200 my rectum

You can just cut the original tailpipe off the backbox and use it, and as got bore you'd have to go for the bore of the piping already in place? Or slightly larger and make a sleeve and just clamp it up.

I love how it sounds but would there be anyway of getting the sound without the turbo flutter as I'm not keen on it

And Ross, did you just go to the place and ask for what you and wanted and they sorted out pipes sizes etc? Is it just a bog standard mufflerectomy? Or anything different done anywhere? Not sure what zorst is? Lol what's your smoke like out the back at 4.5k rpm?

Show off lol

You can do it with standard bore, it sounds hussy on idle though I've used milltek size from turbo back. If you have standard size it won't go woooo. Zorst is me being lazy and spelling exhaust the lazy way. Sorry for short reply it's too early lol

Think I will be calling in a favour of a friend who works in Powerflow to bend me some pipe to make the exhaust up :p

I must admit I would be even more hesitant if its going to cost about £150 quid. My blueflame cost me £180. Hmmm although £65 now that sounds more like it! May have to enquest in my local exhuast garage!

So if I use pipe the same bore as the original piping i won't get the owl noise? :) don't worry lol you should be in bed at that time lol I hope you have a dam good reason lol

Best bet would be just going to someone who can weld as that's all thats needed

I really don't see how some places can charge £150+ for the work unless their labour rates are mega. Lets face it, its just a straight piece of stainless pipe with a tailpipe welded on to suit. Someone that knows what they are doing - an hours labour at say £40 plus £25 for the parts is all it should be. After all that is one of the main points in getting the mufflerectomy is it's supposed to be much cheaper than buying a branded exhaust.

As for the owl noise Wilsy, if you just drive the car normally you wont usually hear it. Its only when you start playing with the throttle do you find you can do it on request :giggle:

I don't want to hear it at all!! Lol what effect would fitting a small backbox have?
