knotchy power steering

Featured Replies

bit of a strange one this, I have a knotchy feeling to the power steering when smootly turning the wheel back to center after exiting a corner, the 'lumpy bits' are at around (forgive me for my accuracy) around 3 mintues to, and seven minutes to.... and they're roughtly the same to the right and the left.

Must this just be as simple as wheel balancing ?

it is smooth when moving slowly or manouvring, the fault is only noticable 20mph upwards

are there any known faults with the power steering which might cause such a problem ??

Many thanks

Paul

Power steering sensor on the way out or air or carp in the fluid???? are the tyre pressures and tyres all ok?? B)

Thanks for the reply. The steering isn't randomly knotchy, it's at specific points, perhaps the power steering sensor could be the issue, is this a known fault ??

thanks

yep, tyre pressures are close enough, but I will double check them

thanks for the advice

Paul

It was on the Mk1 Fabia, they replaced one of mine, £145... Does sound like it tbh.

As the power steering is speed sensitive, it is probably not unusual that you only experience the problem at certain mph. I would imagine you get more assistance the lower the speed. Maybe someone has the tech specs which would tell you what the different levels of assistance are and when they cut in/out. Have you checked the power steering fluid level? Is the issue temperature related i.e. only happens when it gets hot, most cars have some way to cool down the hydraulic fluid used in power steering systems.
