drilled arch mod

Featured Replies

Has anyone done this to there car? Was planning doing it at the weekend if the weather is nice, any gains from it? Better throttle response?

Dunno. Havent noticed any. Probably worth doing though.

You don't get any gains from it but reduced heat soak on warm days.

What size should the holes be?

I had mine drilled and later changed to a B&Q cheap plastic vent cut in instead, I did look at the metal vents but when looking at the difference in air flow surface the plastic one is substantially better and miles better than just the holes drilled. There are some people that still insist that it makes no difference but the way I look at it is, if the R&D team at Porsche decided it was a good thing to do then there must be some benefit. Otherwise why waste all that time and money on tooling etc. I will have a look for the pics if I still have them.

Some of the guys on uk-mkivs.net did this mod by using the arch liner from an Audi TT which has the vents & cutting out that section then fixing it onto the Golf arch liner. Pretty sure there's a how to guide on that site too.

much cheaper to use a BQ one and bbq paint to finish. On the 4x4 the inlet vent was also restrictive and that has had some attention as well :D

with the front vent there was a large part of the surface area was restrictive so cut it out leaving enough plastic to keep some strength, then covered with a fine mesh to stop stones etc. Finished with Black BBQ paint as it is quite tough :D

I fitted the cheap plastic vent over the area where I had previously drilled and sprayed with the BBQ paint again to finish. The vent must have at least ten times the surface area holes so it really does make a difference so not worth drilling IMHO

That is how I did it using TT arch vent and cutting it out the TT arch and fitting into the VRS arch using a template. I was fussy. I have pics i will dig out..

Mind you have a FMIC now ....

i just pop riveted mine on, you can just see the small cuts i made at the top so it would bend.

A big drill bit. half inch holes I think.

I used a TT vent. see picture in http://briskoda.net/..._1#entry2300875

The vent cost me nothing as it came from a damaged TT wheel arch liner. It was bonded to my liner with TigerSeal.

I bought mine think the TT arch was about £25 , cut out the vent leaving about a 20mm lip all round and stuck it in place with Tigerseal, left it overnight to set.

OK, we get the idea!

£25 is a tad dear when a few drilled holes would do the same job.

I just drilled mine

The TT one I fitted.

Oppppsssss sorry guys about that didnt realise it had happened, the bloody pc had a brainstorm and seized up so

I ripped the plug out of the wall.

Once again apologies, wasnt trying to make a point honest

I've been wondering about this for a little while...

Big hole to let the air in, no hole to let it out. Seems a little daft.

I'm not sure about the big(ish) holes and no mesh, seems like a good chance of filling it up with all sorts of rubbish...

It would be interested to know if anyone has any comparison figures from before and after.

Tom

I think the hole mod looks well ....... A bit pikey . I would pay for the TT vent and do a good job from the beginning , that's me tho

If you want to pay £25 for a 6 inch square of plastic be my guest!

Ive recently taken the arch liner off for cleaning the inner areas and found no appreciable dirt there at all.
