Shame quite liked the idea of shedding another 20kg with the cost of an hours work.

Had a quick look this afternoon and nothing visible that's not need under there. Did notice that the doing and shock are seperate. Is this causing problems when fitting coilies??

its the same on most McPherson strut cars; coils only go on the front and and the back has seperate springs and dampers. the rear springs come with an adjustable twist cap for adjusting height

see on the other thread about this weight being in the rear bumper. is it a case of taking the bumper off and there it is in front of you, or is it as janner thought, and incorporated into something else ??

If what fabianoh5n1 says is correct and that there are 3 weight packs situated in the right hand side of the rear bumper then it would be dodgy to remove as the weight distribution will then be way out of balance. Would like to know more on this though

I've seen it - when my friend's vrs had to be stripped for some reason (can't remember for what) the ballast must be what I saw right behind the bumper in the shape of 3 or 4 blocks of metal with a metallic rod running through them.

still removing it at the same time as replacing the battery cant affect the balance to much. especially if its corner weighted

Really you can only corner weight a car with adustable suspension so you would need coilovers

If you have fixed height springs then the only way to corner weight is to place weights at specific points in the car to trim the weight distribution which means you may as well not bother moving it, but i think you have a valid point in that if you get a battery that saves you 15-20kg on the front left it could cancel out the weight transfer and actually total nearly 50kg of potential weight loss. So its 100% worthwhile considering

Happy days that's the post we all needed to here.

Who's thinking of stripping it off then?

i think with removing the weight it will have less unbalancing effect on a UK car since you sit on the balance side .

just saw some ppl removing the supercharger noise absorber wich is around 2-2.5kg with the side effect of fulltime supercharger whining untill 3500rpm

Pics?

I know what you mean about the coilies and corner weighting and that is what I'm planning when funds allow.

Could this weight be there to help balance when the fuel tank is emptyish?? I'd rarther carry fuel than metal if this is the case

also as Fab said about sitting the side of the weight surely me being 110 kg will counter act 25 kg removal

Journalists said it was installed to make the car easier to drive iirc

Be keen to know how much extra noise there is with the supercharger casing removed

this was taken from a 170 ps tsi golf with allmost no absorber.

well i know soundfiles sound a bit ....

There is quite abit of extra noise with only half the main casing off. Notice it mainly when short shifting into 2nd. Might remove the charger at the weekend so can get all the casing out.

Any body know how often the charger needs servicing.? New oil etc.

Sounds good, but not sure if that would be ok on a daily basis lol

If you can, take some pics as well. When you taking these weights out of the rear bumper then lol

Yea defo will take a few pics for all to see.

The whine isn't noticeable with normal driving only when the you floor it and the butterfly valve closes.

Quick update guys i have the rear bumper off. And the ballast is on the left!! Its attached to a big bar bolted to the chassis. Bar its self looks quite heavy aswell. Could do with speaking to a tech see if is need.

Using the part number i got a translation of support frame. Only held on with four screws.

That is good news. What do you reckon the ballast and bar weigh in at?

@ hurdy journo's say 25kg

@ pitbull get the pics up, and get it off the car

25kg for the ballast perhaps another 5 for the bar. I left the bar on as i wernt to sure if it was really needed. Getting hit from behind without it wouldn't be pretty. I'll get the pics up soon as. Guna take it for a spin later see if there ls much of a change.
