heres the ballast

this is the bar i was talking about

2011-07-31172844.jpg

i agree that bar should be staying on the car, it looks like its there to limit the crash damage. Is it solid? looks like it would be alot more than 5kg!!

How did the weights stick to the bar, they dont look like they are big enough to fit around that crash beam, or am i looking in the wrong place?

You should chuck the ballast on some scales

without that bar theres nothing of any substance at the rear and as good a driver we think we are cant control the car behind.

the bar itself is hollow. about half the weight of one of the ballast sections.

once that bolt is removed from the front they slide apart as pic below shows.

i dont have any scales but il take one and weigh it tomorrow

How much work is it to remove the rear-bumper?

Gonna remove them when I got my anti-roll bar and coilovers bolted on x).

not alot of work atall. the only hard bit is removing a screw which holds the rear wing and bumper together. more so due to the size of me hands and it being really dam awkward. the screw sits at a really dodgy angle and the wheel arch lining isnt particulaly flexible. took me les than an hour all in.

rear ARB is next on my list. what one you going for ??

whiteline rear adjustable bar for me

Still thinking it over, depends on what my sponsor can do most on ;).

I'll get back in touch when I have more info about that!

where you gettng yours from dude??

Will removing the ballast from the back not make the car handle differently? Surely it's there for a reason?

They put it there to reduce oversteer, but i think it understeers far to much, so ill be doing this as well.

@ p!tbull

How far to the right was the ballast fitted?

it was as LEFT as it could be. rear still feels very planted to be fair. have some majorly bumpy roads by me and no counter steering needed so far.

left  who started the right hand side rumour :giggle:

have sent you a PM BTW

think it was the germans !!! haha. maybe to counter balance the driver weight. be good if someone else with left hand drive could have a look see if theres is on the right or left

What would happen if you crashed or rear ended and the insurance company noticed these had been removed?

im sure 90% of people arent going to know about this. it would only be seconds to put back on anyway and one of the reasons i left the bar they were attached to on the car.

Cool, and you reckon it's handling as well as it did before?

i havent given it the beans yet, not had the time but if anything feel a tad better.

think it was the germans !!! haha

HAAHAA and yes for us it is on the other side same as our traffic

next time i will keep all the secrets for me :p

haha england german jokes still live on.

what side is your petrol cap. the right side as you sit in or the left ??

Could this ballast have anything to do with the fact the vRS (and Monte Carlo) have a narrower wheel track than a bog standard 1.2S?

Seems odd to me to triple the power and then narrow the tracks on what is a quite tall and narrow car anyway? :wonder:

not sure , we first knew about it when we compared the estate weight with the hatch one so and there wasnt much diff between those 2 .

also the estate doesnt have those extra packs .

I`d say they made it like this for another even sportier RS version to say "we saved around 25kg with the use of motorsport technology "

Your probably right there dude. Lose 25kg and give it stage 1 map for 20bhp increase. Charge an extra 5k or something stupid.

I think its a political move (within VAG).

Need to weigh it down to reduce the performance so it doesn't show up the more expensive models.

Some interesting trivia for you here,

We had both twin charged versions of the golf gt 140 and 170bhp in Taiwan.

A local tuner dyno'd both of them stock and after remapping, both made almost exactly the same power stock and after mapping.

Seems VW just called it 140 for marketing reasons........

Also i heard on good authority that the latest 1 series M has been blunted in weight and performance so not to show up the M3.

Stuff like this happens all the time ;)
