Cleaning Turbo

Featured Replies

Hi, When I floor my Fabia vRS in 6th gear (+/- 80-100mph (German autobahn, so not illegal ;) )) it occasional happens that I get a huge power loss (restarting the car resets the problem).

Engine light will not light up, but error code P0234 is stored in ECU.

Found a lot of possible solutions on the net, but since it only happens occasionally I don't think that there's a malfunction in a sensor.

Read a lot about turbo's that are sooted. It there a way clean the turbo without a complete disassembly?

Will check for soot in the intake manifold tomorrow, and I will check if the VNT lever can be operated manually.

Any help would be appreciated.

Kind Regards,

Andy

PS I searched the forum, but I think my English isn't good enough for finding the correct thread

Are you sure you don't have a boost leak somewhere? Even a small one could cause the turbo to overboost, especially when running the engine at full load.

The ECU will put the car into limp mode to stop it killing itself if it detects overboost.

Don't know for sure that there isn't a leak. But having a leak, wouldn't that mean that the engine would always suffer from that problem.

Last friday, I drove about 100km when problem occured

Drove 400km last saturday with no prob at all.

On sunday no problem.

This morning, same problem after 30km (engine temperature was normal)

And by boost leak: I assume you're talking about the actuator (N75) not being able to change position of the nozzle in the turbo?

No a boost leak is as it sounds.

One of the boost pipes from the turbo has a leak so boosted air is escaping. The ECU will sense that not as much air is being delivered as what's being requested so will up the boost on the turbo to compensate. If it does this but senses that the turbo is boosting too much, it will put the car in limp mode to stop the turbo being damaged.

You may find that it only puts it in limp mode when full power is requested continuously.

Thanks, will check that.

I'm making a log every I go out with the car now.

Hoping the problem occurs and I can look at sensor values of that moment.

It's a boost leak, small one all be it but a leak. Mine does this when asking for full power in high gears as max boost is needed. Get allthe boost joints secured with cable ties to ensure no leak

Also try the hairspray trick with the boost pipes when putting them all back together

Hairspray trick? :wonder:

Spray some hair spray on the connection I assume? Lol can't see that standing up to much when the car is running lol

Innotec make a liquid turbo cleaner. Never used it though!

Hairspray trick? :wonder:

A quick spray of hairspray on the joints before putting them back together helps to prevent them popping off again, especially on silicone to metal joints.

A tip shown to me by the Shark Wizard B)

the Shark wizard = Ben from shark or Vrs Shark? :p

Will look at the entire intake tomorrow.

Also found something on the internet about cleaning the exhaust part of a turbo with ...... Mr. Muscle :p

In theory it should work.

Won't do the turbo oil seals much good though. Plenty of how to clean VNT on Google. Requires a complete strip down to do the job right.

Trying to get a hold on the Turbo Clean set from Innotec.

Read a few reviews about it and people seem te be very pleased about the product.

Only problem is the fact that they will only sell it to a company, no private sales :(

Plenty available on eBay

I had a problem with the vanes being coked up to hell and sticking open, which would result in limp mode at high revs. I ended up taking the turbo off and stripping it down and cleaning it up. Been fine ever since.

Wash out the intercooler. Easy, but make sure empty of water before restart.

There's absolutely no company that is willing to ship the Turbo Clean set

Companies in the Netherlands will not sell to a private person.

Companies in UK will not ship abroad.

How hard can it be to get this item???
