sure will....

Hi there,

I ran the Maxxis MAZ1 Victras on my old octavia and I was mightly impressed. The car came to me with michelin pilots on and when I went to replace them the tyre place I use suggested these as I always drive my cars hard on tight country lanes. I've always used this place for tyres so trust their suggestions. The tyres were grippy and worked well in the rain too! They were completely useless in the snow though! However I do live on top of a steep hill and had to attempt a hill start which it refused point blank to do on more than one occasion! I went through 2 sets of them and chose to replace like with like.

When I replaced all the tyres about 12 months ago I couldn't get hold of the Maxxis within my time window and instead went with the Kuhmos mentioned earlier in the thread and the difference was really noticeable. I'm seriously considering the Maxxis again when my VRS is due for new tyres as they are a cheaper option than the big name brands and seem to do a good job on the roads I drive on.

nice to hear another good review, I basically chose them on the internet reviews, as I went for a best review vs price mindset!

and yes they are summer tyres, all the reviews say that, so come winter I may invest in some proper winters

£70 a corner. was offered falken ZE912's which have reasonable reviews, but I'm not a fan of falken. 2 types of maxxis (one of which I chose) I was going for khumo 31's, but apparently they have been replaced by '39's, he showed me the tyre, and I didn't like the pattern, seemed too open, not enough rubber on the road, the reviews do say they are better than the 31's though. I was originally going to buy the semi-track federals I poseted earlier, but there were none available to order :(

A word of warning on the Kumho 31's. I have had a set on the front and then got 2 more for back and rotated them. Just done my brake pads and the two front tyres have a split right across the tyre, one worse than the other, but still had to put spare on one corner and rotate the other to the back till I get some new tyres. I have sworn by them as well cos they have performed great. Just worried about the splits!!!

pushed them in the rain today, better than I expected :) much better than the worn conti's not quite up to (and I mean not quite, very close!) the new contis on traction and ultimate grip, but for half the price, I'm not complaining

Ive a set of Rainsport 2's running on the front of my stilo now and the remaining 2 of 4 Sport maxx TT's on the back, the Avon's are a much more composed tyre in the damp and wet, dry high speed cornering does seem to make them 'squirm' about a bit more than the Dunlops did though.

I have to say the front sport maxx's only lasted 6000 odd miles partly down to the fact they span up a lot in the wet!

I think I will be straight onto a set of Rainsports when the standard tyres are low on the fab.

Had the conti 2's on track today at rockingham and they weren't up to the job. Haven't had much bad tto say about them until today, you could feel them'going off big style, both me and my brother noticed it after you do around 4 laps hard, they just lose grip.

And today has all but finished my conti's completely. 3987miles sso far, with 145 miles'ccovered at rockingham today, and around 20 runs at the 1/4 mile. Id say no moremthan 1500 miles left in them

The second'biggest weak point of my car today, the first being the brakes lol

right, after about 12.5k I need new front tyres, brilliant though the conti's are, they stop working in the rain at 3 mill (German limit) and although they are still legal, I'm replacing them..

my theory is "mid range is best compramise for cost vs performance" I'm not gonna spend huge money for more conti's that will wear quick again... but I also hate cheap plasic tyres... I've gone for these as a summer tyre (I may do proper winter tyres this winter)

maxxis make race tyres (can't remember which country, malaysia maybe) these have 95% feedback score for dry weather, and 83% for wet!

£70 each fitted and balanced

I will post a comparison to the conti's reveiw after I've done a few thousand miles, and been to the august meet and caned it :giggle:

Where did you get the maxxi's for 7-inc fitting? I need some new fronts myself!

right my fianl review, seeing as the weather is appaling this morning, and was warmd and dry yesterday, and I have now done a few thousand miles on them and I'm pushing the limits :0

WET: and its very wet today.. very, very wet.. tyres: very good, compaired to the contis they loose out only slightyl on wet traction, and aquaplaning, with the aquaplaning I'm talking about big puddles, the genreal road water is cleared easy and without fuss... VERY confidence inspirirng, because it feels so planted, and breakaway is very progressive and easily managed. ultimate cornering speeds in the wet, just as good as the contis.

DRY: astonishing. my last reveiw I didn't find the dry limit, yesterday I did, they are far better in the dry than the contis, the ultimae grip is astonishing! its actually changed the balance of the car (conti's still on the back) much more to my liking, its now much 'pointyer' at the front, and more twitchy at the back, has changed from being simple wash out understeer, to being much more kart like! I love it! reminds me of the old saxo VTS, you can chuck it with wild abandon into a corner, and it will turn in! (then sort it out after ! lol..) so much more fun than simple wash out understeer!

very happy with these, and at £70 a pop, I will have again

  • 1 month later...

Also went for the Uniroyals. After looking at my Dunlops and how bald they were, decided they needed changing. Comparison shot of tread on both tyres:

I always get confused at threads like this.

Please take this the right way, but there is something seriously wrong if you have, at the very least 12-13k's worth of car, and can't afford the 30 quid a tyre extra to put decent tyres on.

Top performance tyres by brands like Michelin, Continental, Goodyear etc often get fobbed off by 'the thinking man' as he won't be doing 10/10ths on the way to work.

Reality is, I want the 5-10 feet of stopping distance a premium tyre gives me over a cheaper one for when the child steps off the pavement. In some cases the difference is even more significant.

If money is a real problem, get a 0% purchase credit card and spread the payments over a month or two.

In my experience cheaper tyres also give more road noise, and can totally destroy the handling of a car. You have a Fabia VRS, not a Ferrari I know, but its also not a 200 quid astra mk3 1.4 merit.

Are you aiming that statement at the Uniroyals? Not sure if you are aware, but Uniroyal = Continental. Uniroyal often come very high up the tyre review tests and aren't a budget tyre.

It's not that money is a problem, but why pay £50 extra a tyre when Uniroyal's do exactly the same, if not better, in certain situations.

I still back the Federal RSR-595 tyres, the grip is still insane =D!

I'm aiming it at any tyre that doesn't perform in the top 10-20% of a tyre test, irrespective of make, model, brand, whatever.

I'm aware the uniroyals are supposed to be quite decent, but a lot of the middle of the market seems totally pointless to me. And the bottom end? in several cases I'm amazed its legal.
