Fixed or variable service info

Featured Replies

I have no idea what service schedule I am on - am now on about 8500 miles and it has given me a message on the maxidot that it needs servicing in 900 miles which is approx the 10,000 mile mark so do I assume I am on fixed servicing and what is the difference between fixed and variable, and why dont I have a clue what my service intervals are (limit yourselves to only one comment about stupidity etc please).

Sigh !...........

I understood the Yeti was set for variable servicing at the factory, but you could opt for fixed servicing if you wished? If you do a low annual mileage, fixed services at 10k miles might be preferable, because irrespective of miles, oil deteriorates over time. A high annual mileage and variable servicing might be preferred. I've just had my first service at a little over 18k miles, as advised by maxidot, but I will do 20k or more miles a year.

You'll be on 'Fixed' - 1 year or 10,000 miles which ever is sooner.

Variable is 2 years or 18,000 miles (initially) which ever is sooner; with a caveat that it monitors your typical driving so may be a little longer or may come down to the 12-14,000 mile area.

Full details of the two options are IIRC in the handbook but, assuming you bought your Yeti new, which 'servicing regime' you should be on is something your dealer should have discussed with you before taking deliver.

Which one is best for you? It essentially depends on your typical driving and annual mileage.

Lots of short trips, low annual mileage - go 'Fixed'.

Plenty of long Motorway hauls and 15,000 miles per annum or more - go variable.

Hope that's enough to get you going.

Correct; except dealers have a habit of switching it to 'fixed' - so they get to see you more often. ;)

I'd asked for it to be kept on variable for Kevin; but it got put to fixed; so I got dealer to put it back to variable.

Yeah, whilst mine was set to variable I got 'phone calls and e-mails from my dealers service dept when the car was a year old trying to pressurise me into taking it in for a service. Only when I spoke directly to the service manager and told him about my mileage and usage did he agree that variable was a better option and told his staff to stop pestering me.

You are on the same as me. Elsie the helipad told me to 'service now' at about 9350 miles. She was serviced today at 9500 miles. She is on fixed servicing as set up by me when I collected her from James. Because of the style of driving I mainly do, i.e around London most days, the engine will have been running for as long as or even longer than a car on variable servicing that is motorway/open road driven. Hence why I am currently on fixed servicing.

Cost was almost £95.

Oil & filter change, new sump plug (?), 4.3 litres of Mobil Super 3000 XE 5w30 Low Ash oil. Visual bodywork check, check levels (topped up empty washer fluid), clean car.

Hi Mike,

was the service carried out at Allams :wonder:

Round here you pay a lot more for servicing, think Pats first service was a eye watering £150 after ringing round :o almost worth driving down  Service not the best either, Pickering missed a seized brake calliper on my lads car and Hull left a faint screwdriver bruise on the dash on the other Fabia after 'fixing' a loose air vent under warranty :S

Regard the original question have all my cars serviced at 10,000 or 1 year, tried the variable on previous cars and didn't like the state of the oil got into.

Regards,

TP

Yep. Allams. Also changed a mirror that wasn't returning from its dipped position properly when taking out of reverse.

Yes it does sound like we are the same as mine is now estimated at around the mid 9000's and guess that as I do around 12,000 miles a year the fixed option is probably the way to go, especially if the prices are that low ? Seems very cheap for a service although I noticed my front tyres might need replacing soon. Also as mentioned in someones post my mirrors dont dip when I reverse ??

How long did your service take ??

But what is your typical driving? Rockhopper is driving from Surrey up to, in and around London all day; mega stop/start etc. If you do fewer trips but gentle Countryside driving variable will be OK.

Auto Dipping door mirrors in reverse only operates if you have electric seat adjustment IIRC.

mine is every 10000 miles - and both have cost aroung £100 at Sinclair Skoda. Good value.

Im pretty sure the mirrors are meant to dip when you have selected position 'R' on the knob then reverse, and they correct if speed over 15kph or you change the knob back. Its only the memory function that you get with the electric seats !

So my manual says anyway, I have the top range elegance so would expect them to work.

My driving is mainly easy gear changes then cruise control on long stretch to work for 20 mins, so not urban driving by any means.

If you have the electric seat and have a UK spec vehicle, then the manual is WRONG, as it is for a left hand drive vehicle. Try putting the switch to the 'L' and see what happens......emoticon-0140-rofl.gif No electric seat, NO dipping mirror.....(it is part of the package with the electric seat with Skoda-I understand some VAG cars do this without the leaky seat, but not Skoda)

You should be fine for variable servicing in my opinion. You could get your local dealer to change it to variable and then wait another 10k miles......or service it very 9350 miles or so like TP.

To be fair it aint going to do it any harm to be serviced every 10,000 miles, so will just leave it at that until I change it for a nice new one in a year or so time.

:)

Or more precisely order it in a years time then wait a year for it to be delivered !!

I would have reset your Yeti from variable to fixed prior to you collecting, I think with all news cars you should service them in the first 12 months/10,000 regardless, after this point you may wish to switch to variable but I don't think it is a bad thing to leave them on fixed, better to get them looked at more often than not.

I shall be booking it in for its first service very soon so hopefully there might be a nice cup of tea and a sticky bun while I wait ???

I've become a bit of a tea brewing expert, you'll certainly have to try it. Got some biscuits too!

Not sure about sticky buns, I don't think Beth would let us have any due to the ridiculous mess I'd make!!

Biccies and Earl Grey it is then !! Presume I can get it serviced on a Sat morning James or does it have to be a weekday ?

Kevin is set to 'variable' and having checked this morning, he's done 7104 miles with service due in 11600 miles or 555 days. Service therefore due at 18700 miles.

This, I think, has crept up a bit, as for the first 6000 miles the prediction was 18,600; perhaps a result of no longer doing 8 miles each way of stop/start driving in my commute. Have to keep an eye on this.

I may though opt to do an interim oil change around 10,000 miles. We'll see.

What is the difference in what is done with fixed/variable servicing.

My assumption was that with variable you get fully synthetic oil and fixed maybe ordinary or part synthetic oil.

Is this the case?? If so should mean about £40 max extra for the variable service.

Any other differences in the services??...my dealer(sales person) was a bit vague on the subject.

Will probably ask for a fixed service at 10k using fully synthetic oil (Castrol Edge 5-30w used for top ups).

Hopefully getting the best of both at a reasonable additional cost. I take the 'honest john' website view

that oil ain't that good at 15000-18000 miles especially the last few thousand miles.

Dealers should be using 'Longlife' oils for all servicing now according to VAG

Need to confirm however as

1. Some are incapable of reading VAG bulletins

2.Of those that can, some choose to ignore the instruction and blatantly deny any knowledge....and fill with any old cheap stuff they want to get rid of

Lots of stories about this on the Golf Forums.....

So what then is the difference between fixed and variable servicing ...it can't just be the time/mileage interval??

What's the Service Book say?

The answer my friend is .......

... not blowing in the wind, but ......

.......... probably in the Service Handbook in your Glovebox. ;)
