Vrs Hesitating on heavy load

Featured Replies

Hey all, had this problem for a while since i cleaned the EGR valve, but i overcome it by blocking the valves vacuum pipe, now it hesitates on heavy acceleration with the EGR pipe still blocked. Any ideas what could be doing this? I remembe when i put the EGR valve back on the rubber O ring i fitted was a tad smaller then the original so not sure if that has anything to do with it?

Just need ideas as the fun in driving has gone a bit now :(

Thanks guys

What RPM does it do it?

its not really a specific RPM, just if i put my foot down really (i never put my foot down under 2k rpm), but i noticed it quite bad last night from about 50 - 70 mph, have a strange feeling its gaining a bit of excess air but im no mechanic

Can you hear a hissing noise when you're accelerating hard?

Not from what i can remember mate, just a holding back feeling

Mine was like this when I got the car. It was down to a boost leak.

One of the boost pipes was partly disconnected, the effect of which could be felt especially when you're asking for full boost like you would do under heavy load.

Since you've disconnected the EGR, are you sure all the pipes are connected back together properly?

I haven't checked them but now you've nentioned it I'll have a look.thanks for the help mate

Just a quick update, checked the common IC pipes that ive taken off and they were all snug. Ive pinpointed a rev range now, its between 2k to 3k revs. any other ideas?

Do the revs climb out of sync with acceleration?

It sounds similar to the problem I had a couple of years ago, mine was down to a faulty fuel filter.

When it does happen, then yes it does, the needle climbs smoothly still but you can tell its not

Do the revs suddenly drop then the car picks up again?

Sounds a lot like a slipping clutch if you ask me

Righto i think its all solved at long last, all day yesturday i spend a few hours cleaning the IC and all the piping and took off the EGR valve for another look. it looked like the replacement O ring which fits between the EGR and inlet didnt do its job properly as when i took the EGR off, around where the O ring sits was all oiled up and gunky. Needless to say i found a better O ring to replace it with, put it all back together nice and clean and touch wood its alot better :)

Thanks for all the help though guys appreciate it

This sounds very similiar to my problem, between 2-2500 rpm the engine seems to be hesitating and feeling lumpy, just before this happens i can hear a whistly raspy noise ( not very loud) i dont get any black smoke so i ruled out a boost leak.

can someone please point me in the direction of the 0 ring that your talking about ? Also is there anything i would need apart from a new 0 ring? to put the Egr vaulve back to gether.

sorry for the hyjack but this is the first time ive seen anyone mention a similar problem.

Hiya mate

The O ring thats mentioned is the washer between the EGR valve and the inlet manifold thats behind the engine. The EGR valve is a pain to get off because the allen bolts to remove it are awkward to get to especially with big hands!

Sorry to revive my old thread but the problem seems to ba back with a vengence! What possibilities would make the car hesitate when accelerating? I was thinking now a dead MAF? im a little bit stuck now and its really doing my head in :(

Answer that question ;) Could be a slipping clutch...

Not had it on VAGCOM?

  • Author

When it does it, The revs dont drop, they just build up really lumpy. As for vagcom, i have a cheapo one laying around so will see if that pops up with anything, if not then off to the garage it is :(

mis firing? i had a similar problem and one of the wiring looms in the head had failed causing hesitation when accelerating. Vagcom picked it up straight away. it cost me £120 to fix at a VAG specialist so prob cheaper at an indy

  • Author

Aah ok, il have a check of that just incase, thanks

  • Author

Well my cheapo VAG-COM brought up no error codes (but i did have a play with some of he things it waas showing me :)) so, now im really lost :(

As cheeky as it is to ask, if anyone local to me has a bit of know how and a bit of time, im willing to share beer tokens if that can help me out

Well Ive finally gotten to the bottom of it once and for all! All down to the fuel filter, Now why didnt i start there in the first place?
