Columbus and RDS-TMC Traffic info

Featured Replies

I used to have a Nexus satnav in my Octavia, but sold it on as I have a TomTom with LIVE HD Traffic service. To get the traffic info on the Nexus all you had to have was the correct version of the maps.

So, my question is, does the Columbus have the ability to display traffic information from the FM radio RDS-TMC broadcasts? If so, is it normally standard, or is it a case of sourcing the correct version of the maps? Do the fleabay units normally come with traffic enabled maps?

The reason I am asking is because TomTom have made a recent change to the HD Traffic Service that means that you only receive traffic data in a 50 mile radius of your current position. It used to be over a 100 miles. This means that if I am heading to London, my TomTom only takes in to account traffic data as far south as Stoke - Loughborough. I have a few different routes that could get me to London - M62/M6/M1, M62/M1, M62/A1, M62/M6/M42/M40, and major incidents around Birmingham or approaching London would determine which is the best route to set off on. It is no good to me to be halfway down the M6 to find out I would have been an hour better off going a longer way round such as M62/A1, so I am thinking of selling the TomTom and getting a Columbus if it supports Traffic functionality, as the RDS-TMC functionality tends to be nationwide or near enough coverage, although not to the same level of detail as the TomTom HD Traffic Service which has until recently been excellent.

Thanks

Yes, the columbus fully supports TMC on all A roads and motorways throughout the UK and most of europe. I got quiet a surprise in my UK superb as I approached Seville in spain, and the columbus proudly proclaimed "Attention Traffic Problems". You can display the local road data by pressing the Traffic button, but it will work across your whole route regardless of where the traffic incident is.

Excellent - might be on the lookout for a Columbus soon.

Thanks for the reply.
