MOT changes

Featured Replies

There have been several threads about this, and the chipping one is pretty much tosh.

Can you imagine how much gear they need in order to check the ECU properly for every single car manufacturer on the planet? plus training and time?

Exactly. It's never going to happen. They may ban those plug in boxes but that will be a visual check and nothing more

will just be visual and a bit of a route around the cables, many of these mot centres dont even bother especially if the mots are discountedemoticon-0112-wondering.gif

I can`t see it working  and they will change there minds by end of the year  they was going to put the MOT to ever 2 years but did not do it :dull: and i do not need a MOT to 2014 :D

they could never police it... an ECU update from the manufactures adding a "count" could be deemed a map... they could never make it work...

"such as headlamp

bulb and unit incompatibility,

headlamp levelling devices and

illegal engine ‘chipping’ – will need

further thought before we can get

a workable solution for MOT

stations."

No dates mentioned or what they intend, so we're discussing something about which we don't know what they intend to do!

It would be possible - it all depends on just how much the government wish to invest.

What can be safely said is that it won't happen in January.

Remember there are countries that do ban the "chipping" of cars - so it could happen.

All I'm happy about is the crack-down on after-market HID's come January.

Maybe I won't be getting dazzled quite so much soon.

My take on that is its talking about tuning boses etc that piggy back or trick the ECU

Don't forget that in Belgium you car has to be 100% standard to get an mot. That means no bodykits, spoilers, alloys, suspension, filters, exhausts etc etc...

No doubt this us to do with 'green' issues or safety concerns.

Please forgive my lack of knowledge about this subject but what is the difference between an ecu remap and a tuning box?

Sounds to me like the worst place to be for a car enthusiast.

Maybe, but it is also the central administrative state of Europe.

Still think it can't happen here?

If so, how does this car pass then?

Nope it can't and for me there is one explanation. The automotive industry/market and what surrounds it has huge influence due to the amount of money they make annually (in the millions) out of all the things you just mentioned that are a sure MOT fail in Belgium. When money talks... well you know the rest ;)

An ECU Remap is basically an altertered map on the ECU itself. A Tuning box plugs into the ECU and can be removed at any time

Belgians do mod their cars, but for the mot it all comes off, back standard and then back on after the mots.

It's why most Belgian modders don't do major engine work/engine swaps

it makes you laugh, i buy my car i dont rent it, its mine and so long as its safe i should be able to do with it as i please. i tax it, insure it (why not catch those buggers) and i pay for petrol, services etc etc to keep it safe. why call them 'illegal' ecu maps, its my car and my choice so whats illegal about it? illegal should be something done by somebody else without me knowing. whats next, you must only use the exact tyres stated by the manufacturer, exhaust etc etc

i feel for the Belgium's but can only see it happening here soon too

well this srpings up a question with what will happen to all those cars that manfacturers have remaped, for example both ford and skoda offer a remap to customers as part of a sports kit ford uses mount-tune and skoda use REVO.. having this done through your dealer ensures your car is still coverd under warrenty so what your saying now is after those first three years have passed you take your car in for its MOT and its going to fail? even though it was remapped by a SKODA Dealer??

Can you point me in the direction where Skoda say they will continue to fully honour the warranty on a vehicle that has had a remap by any company.

You'll see numerous companies saying they will warrnaty their work and will "cover things if Skoda refuse".

But Skoda themselves will not honour say a blown turbo if you have a remap done by any company.

You are not covered by any Skoda warranty if you have a remap that is not provided as an option by Skoda themselves.

If a dealer remaps a car, they will be taking responsibility for anything no longer covered by the Skoda warranty. You need to remember that no other dealer will provide this cover.

The MOT remap thing will come, but it will take a while. Currently, most ECU units only show the last diag unit serial number that was plugged into the car. If they used that, a VCDS session would render the car for an MOT fail. MOT stations would need a rolling road (never happen) or equipment capable of reading the map values stored in the ECU EPROM. It would still cost big money, but one guess as to who will pay that cost.
