Hi all, I have just ordered a set of 215/60 R16 95H Goodyear complete with steel rims from Eiretyres.com which is the Irish version of Mytyre. My question relates to where is the best place to get a set of steel wheel nuts for the new rims ?

No need to. Just use the ones on your wheels already. Not aware of anybody having found any wheel nuts that are 'only' for the steel wheels. I think the 'E' which comes with steel wheels uses the same wheel nuts as my elegance.

Hi,

as rockhopper states there is only one wheel bolt spec for steels and VAG alloys, only issue would be using after-market alloys which often use a different cone profile.

TP

:D Thanks to The Plumber and Rockhopperhttp://ww1.briskoda.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/default/emoticon-0102-bigsmile.gif

If the doomsayers are correct in forecasting another hard winter like the last two I think the money spent on the correct tyres will be a small price to pay for peace of mind and safety. Thanks again for the info

My Nankangs arrived midweek from mytyres (great service) . Look impressive, I hope they perform as per my previous Nankangs. Will post a picture if I remember.

All I need is a Yeti to put them on.

As a new Yeti owner, these threads on winter tyres have been very helpful - I definetely want some winter shoes for our 'beast' to deal with the treachorous conditions we have had on the East Anglian fens these last 2 winters, and for winter trips to our property in Snowdonia, North Wales. After digesting the various comments, I think I will get some 16 inch (7J) VAG steel wheels to start with, then choose the tyres (probably 215/60) after that. Where should I go for the best deal on the steel wheels - Skoda dealer ? - what sort of price should I pay ? (I think I saw someone mention they got them for about 35 pounds each).

Thanks

Pete

I depends on what trim of any you want to put on the wheels. The Skoda wheels accept the Skoda trims, but non-Skoda wheels don't seem to. Some people by from ebay as long as the PCD & ET are the same. (PCT = 112mm ET =45) as per the Plumbers excellent technical guide. Non Skoda wheels as mentioned elsewhere may not have the same profile for the nuts and you may need to by some new nuts.....

I pid about £180 for a set of 4 black steel wheels from Skoda last year.

If you want to use snow chains then 205/55 R16'a else the best to go for is the 215/60 R16's. I personally from experience will be having a FULL SIZE spare winter tyre this year few my escapades last winter. I won't use alloys for the same reasons - you can't 'bang' them back into shape if you hit anything......

My 2p worth.

MIke

Thanks Mike

I just ordered the steel wheels from Wings in Peterborough at 40 pounds (+VAT) each - they originally quoted me 52 pounds, but I beat them down ! Should arrive late this week. Then I will explore tyre options.

Are there any downsides to the winter tyres when used in dry conditions on normal roads - ride, handling, noise issues ? Any comments are most welcome.

I agree with Bahnstormer, but I would also expect increased tyre wear when the temperature rises. If used in summer they won't stop as quickly as summer tyres......summer tyres don't stop as quickly in winter as winter tyres either.....

Another plus is that winter tyres don't wear as quickly in the winter as summer tyres.

Thanks Mike

So I guess the trick is to switch over when the temperatures start to drop below an average of about 7 degrees, and then back to summer tyres as soon as things warm up in the spring.

Final question - any recommendations for tyre make/supplier to put on my 7J 16 rims ?

Thanks again

I'm using Continental WinterContact TS810 or 830P depending on which I can get hold of (I already have 3 TS810 tyres. need 2 more). The Michaels Alpin are good, but it really depends on what you want to spend. Almost all winter tyres will be better than summer tyres in the winter, and everybody will give you a different answeremoticon-0136-giggle.gif

I've just spoken to Continental and the TS810 tyres have been discontinued. The direct replacement is the TS830P, so I will order 2 of those.

Vredestein Wintrac Extreme would be my preferred choice as here http://www.tyremen.co.uk/tyrefinder.aspx although I bought Yokohama W-drive last year (from mytyre.co.uk) and find them quite acceptable.

Both are mid priced. Another good supplier is http://www.camskill.co.uk/m96b0s1631p0/Winter_-_Snow_-_Cold_Weather_-_Car_MPV_Tyres_-_16_inch_R16_inch_-_215_60_16_215_60_R_16

although both these suppliers are showing limited stock so you might have to go to mytyres.co.uk

Hi and welcome Pete,

have just bought Hankook W310 evo's as they were at a very good price of £77 from Camskill but I think they have now sold out. Not used Hankook's before but I think they will do the job and hard to refuse at the price. Previously used Nokian WR G2 but they have been like hens teeth to get hold off in the 215 size for over a year now and the wife has Bridgestone Blizzak LM30's on her Fabia; both of these I would recommend.

Another option and highly recommended by Agerbundsen over in Denmark is the Goodyear Eagle Ultra Grip, which he has run on his Yeti right across Europe and down into Spain, so across a wide spectrum of air temperatures on one trip.

Regard fitting I tend to switch early in November and back end of March early April.

Regards,

TP

My Skoda dealer has just sourced me some steel rims - normally I'd get the tyres myself but I couldn't be arsed. So I have a set of purposeful looking Lassis- a joint venture between Bridgestone and some Tukish outfit. Am sure they will be ok- I know that everybody becomes a tyre expert every time they buy a set but if I am brutally frank I couldn't tell any of the winter tyres I have had over the last 20 odd years apart- they all work. Far bigger difference is in how cars with godawful traction- step forward MK IV Golf-feel on slimy roads and winter tyres compared to summer pattern. I am surprised the TCS bulb didnt wear out.(MK V was exemplary in comparison)

Ok here is some shots of the Nankang Snow SV-2 tyres, 205 55 16. They look very similar to the previous Nankangs I had if my memory serves me well, hoping they perform as well.

I got a set for my Son's Rover 25TD last winter. They were great and will be again when swaps. He also has Nankang summer tyres on at the moment.

Steel rims (7J x 16) have arrived. Agonised over which tyres to buy. I have just ordered 4 Hankook W310 215/60 R16s from MyTyres at 108 pounds each - not cheap, but hopefully will provide good safe perfortmace. I'll get my local garage to fit/balance them.

Thanks for all comments/recommendations.

Pete

Just oirdered:

Vredestein 205/55 R16 94V Wintrac Xtreme XL FSL

Shoes only - I'll get Skoda steelies from a local dealer.

I just need a Yeti to put them on!

And yes, it's very kind, but don't bother volunteering!

Mytyres supplied my winter boots this week, opted for their rim and tyre deal went for 7j's with Goodride 215/60/16's, may need to be careful with'em, but here in Finistere only a few days/year of snow, so mainly wet stuff. My thought being if they are cr*p then put a more known tyre on next summer - using mytyres site the rims were about 30€ each and thsy appear of eqiv dimensions metal thickness etc as my spare.

I'm sure the tyres will be fine. I think some of the magazines get far too hung up on brand names and the prices that go with them.

It's not so long ago that Skodas were viewed with the same level of dismissal that far eastern tyres are nowadays.

I just discovered that the local Skoda dealer has actually supplied me with 6J x 16 rims, instead of the 7Js i ordered - I checked the part number on the invoice, and picked this up ! It's a good job I checked, as I don't think the 215/60 R16 Hankooks I have ordered from mytyres will go on the 6Js .

The dealer has promised to order me the 7Js for next week, and take back the 6Js. The 7Js are actually slightly cheaper (I think someone else mentioned that earlier in this thread).

Yes your correct you need the 7J for your Hankooks, which coincidently is was I've just bought also. The 6J are more expencive due to being an Audi rather than VW part as in the case with the 7J :S

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder but to my eyes they just looked wrong on my car:

I just prefer the chunkey look of the 215s personally.

Johann... your pics show two different types of centre trims used on your steels. What are they, and why 2 different sets? (I assume the wheels are 16" standard VAG steels) I originally bought a set of T5 trims, but the Skoda bolt heads aren't long enough to hold the T5 trims in place, so now I have 3! Are the ones you use any more secure?
